I upgraded my ASUS P4T/Pentium 1.4 Ghz/Win98 machine by adding 512 MB PC800 RDRAM memory to what was already installed...which is Kingston 128 MB PC800 RDRAM. The machine recognized the memory and boots up no problem. Everything seems to be stable but the sound didn't work in BF1942. It either wouldn't work at all or would work for a bit then cut out. Most of the time...it just will not work at all. Also, I had sound problems when running AquaMark 3 demo where the sound crackled. Media players work fine, though, as far as sound goes. So, I took out the 128 MB Kingston and I don't have the problems anymore. Before I removed it, I had 512 MB(2 x 256MB) in the first slot and moved the 128 MB(2 x 64MB) to the second slot. I tried re-seating the memory as a troubleshooting step to no avail before removing the 128 MB. So, now I'm just running the 512 MB SimpleTech memory and everything seems fine. So, I guess I may have a memory compatibility problem. However, the manufacturer of the newer memory claims it is compatible with all other memory of this type and the motherboard. I guess that is a bunch of BS eh? I was thinking of, after installing WinXP Home, trying all the modules again to rule out a Win98 OS issue. I guess 128 MB won't be missed much but... . This sucks. Any thoughts or ideas...anyone? Surf
Are they both registered/unregistered? I've had some inexplicable RAM issues before. I even have a board that wouldn't accept registered ram, so I have 2 GB sitting in a box.
sorry for getting your hopes up and posting, but i think you made a mistake buying that pc800 memory. I think it's time for an upgrade. I haev a 1.7ghz p4 and i too have pc800 memory but it's way slow compared to ddr memory. It's kinda late to tell you all this i know and i wish i coulda told you sooner because i spent 200 bucks also a couple of years ago for the same amount of money. Anyway don't worry about the wasted 128 mb because i don't think you'll notice any difference between 768 (which i have right now) and 512, especially with a 1.4ghz processor.
I know the new SimpleTech memory is unbuffered non-ECC. I'm not sure about the Kingston that came with the CPU originally. Why is that important?
I know I could of upgraded. It costs more than $200 to set up a new machine...at least with the components I want. I'm not ready to lay down that kind of money. This wasn't an impulse decision and your not saving me from anything. I just wanted some more memory to play some later games and upgrade to Win XP Home. I didn't want to buy a marginal upgrade at this time by replacing the mb, memory, and cpu. I priced the newer components I would want and it came out significantly more than I'm ready to spend for the foreseeable future. So, save your pity.
