I'm looking an effective, easy-to-use firewall that I can download for free. Any suggestions?

I've got a firewall with my router and I was running ZoneAlarm with it, but lately I've notice ZA slowing down my ability to surf... when I turn ZA off, pages load much quicker. I have disabled ZA and am now just using my router.

But ZA is one of the best free firewalls out there.

If you're running Windows XP, it has a built in firewall that is off by default. Service pack 2 turns it on by default.

    Sygate.

It's the best freebie one I've found.

Yea I got sygate personal too. It's more user friendsly than Zone Alarm. Also sygate has 5 modules which provide protection for email, general, instant messaging, and some other ones..

I have outpost firewall installed with the pc behind a router. If you don't like to micromange software firewall rules, at least enable the xp firewall

was also using zonealarm until i realized how much it was slowing down bittorrent (even properly configured).

its funny because soulseek and bittorrent were the only 2 programs that zonealarm had an effect on- kazaa, newsgroups, emule and dc++ all got along fine with zonealarm....

    Zone Alarm.

It's free, and I've had very few problems with it.

Adaware is generally regarded as the best. I use it and I haven't been disappointed.

I've heard some people say that you should also get Hijack This to cover all the bases, but so far Adaware has been plenty good enough for my needs. Here's the Hijack This link if you want to check it out for yourself.

Do not use the Windows XP built-in firewall. It only blocks incoming traffic on ports, not outgoing traffic. Get a real firewall that will block off the port entirely.

I have used software firewalls and hardware firewalls, and I gotta say that I greatly prefer a hardware firewall.

Get multiple ones - no one program will get rid of everything at any given time.

These are 2 free ones :

    Spybot Search & Destroy
    Adaware
