This is a perfect example of why you have to take the numbers with a grain of salt but TRUST your eyes. Against OKC, I thought one of the brighter spots was the play of Aaron Holiday. Dude hit 6 of 7 3pt shoots and played good defense. I thought one of his best games as a Rocket. And apparently Im not the only one who thinks that. So did Jackson Gatlin; And since I listen to ALL things Rockets. I was checking out Frank with the Chop Shop as well. At the 12:17 mark he made mentioned of how Holiday, along with FVV had one of the worst +/- for the game. Everybody saw the game. He was efficient, he played good defense, he didnt have any turnovers. So, do you believe the numbers or your eyes?
Yes, everyone knows Holiday has been great of the bench and is having a great season so far. What is your point?
you have to know how to look at numbers. Single game +/- for an individual player is meaningless, because it is impacted by our lineup and opponent lineup during his minutes. It only shows you how the scoreboard moved when he was on the floor. However, over a larger sample, these confounding variables average out and cancel out. In other words, a player can have a great game and we can still fall behind if the other 4 on our team suck and/or the other team has their best lineup during these minutes. However over extended period, if we consistently fall behind when a player is in, then that’s a problem…
Very good analysis! And to conceptualize, the majority of the time that Aaron Holiday or lets say Player "A" is on the court , his numbers, +/-, isn't solely determined by his output but the others that he is playing with or whom they are playing against, correct? And this is why I say the numbers do not tell the whole story. It more or less departmentalizes players and stats. To me, Aaron was the most effective player on the court the last game, as well as playing his role as the backup PG since Amen has been injured. However, because the ineffectiveness of Tate, Jalen playing with the 2nd team, and our bench unit as a whole, it brings down his +/-. Which is why I say the Daryl Morey's of the world are only good to a certain point. And when these bloggers like Frank w/the Chop Shop state who is playing well and who isn't, based upon NUMBERS, we have to trust our eyes more so than their theories.
well numbers would dictate that someone who starts a crap load of threads would provide insight and benefit to the site... yet here we are...

lol this is like cross examination to disprove a player you don't like by attempting to disprove said players biggest supporters. I know how you scoundrels work. A+ effort. That said, look at what Holiday did. If we can acquire someone that give us 15pts consistently from the bench to go along with whatever Amen gives us, this is a 50 win team. Maybe Holiday is the guy to do it with the opportunity given.
Not discounting what you said about Holiday. Im in agreement there. However, Im saying as effect as he was and as efficient as he was, how can his +/- be the lowest on the team? And if his +/- was as low as Frank said, then should we look more at the numbers or trust our eyes more? The initial part you elaborated on, I was perplexed.
it’s a make or miss league . Especially for bench players, because of the smalle minutes size , can play well (on defense ) and the opponent can make the shot . You can make the right play of offense , and rim one out . Holiday has been way above my personal expectations this year . Part of that is he’s hitting shots . also agree with the previous poster about it depends on lineups. all stats need to be interpreted correctly. The best ones probably aren't being used by fans , but by front offices and coaches… like what percentage of the time does the player make the “right play” or a “good decision Scheme matters too , and role on the team . someone like PJ Tucker was playing 30 mpg on a 65 win team and was in our most potent lineups because of the things that he did that normal stats didn’t capture .
