Making Monte Williams the highest paid coach in the NBA (by far) right after he got fired just so they could continue being a pathetic team going nowhere. Nice job Pistons!
Monty achieved a lot of success in PHX and was one of the more coveted HCs during the off-season. He was Def a more safe pick than Ime Udoka who had been out of the coaching scene for a year and also had that affair stuff.
sports people were saying he is kind of stubborn even in PHX there were signs. I guess talent was able to rise above his coaching. you see how well bridges played when he was free from Monty.
Ime is kinda stubborn too lol. Bridges is producing the same as in PHX if you look at the year he was traded it is side by side in PHX and BrKN where he "blew up" the stats and efficiency are identical. He just gets more attempts now. https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/bridgmi01.html
Actually, IIRC, this is how it went: 1 The Pistons' list of candidates was pathetic! I remember thinking to myself, "LOL, nobody worth a dime wants the Pistons job". On the other hand, Rockets had several established coaches as possibilities. However, once Udoka interviewed, it was ball game. 2 Monty Williams was not expected to even coach this season. The only reason he took the Pistons job was because he played hardball, asked for crazy money and they paid him out of desperation. No other team was competing with the Pistons for his services. They basically bought him out of retirement. IMO, guaranteeing $78 million to Monty Williams was anything but safe. It was nuts. He's already criticizing the players for their "lack of fight" after less than 20 games. Yikes!
Well if you look back prior to this season Pistons as a coaching destination look a lot better than the Rockets, they got franchise pg Cade Cunningham and also drafted 2 guys who proved they weren't busts, Ivey and Duren. If the Rockets can have their pick of coaches with an 8M budget pretty sure Pistons could have had their pick of the entire pool with a 12M budget. I mean what if they targeted Ime? I'm not sure Ime would have taken the Rox offer if Pistons will give him 50% more.
Suggs looks a lot better than all the guards in the 2021 draft RN. Better than Cade, Green, Giddey, Cam he is a top defensive player, hyper athletic and shoots 36% from 3 this season. His real calling might be at sg.
You can talk hypothetically all you want, but let's try reality instead. From the PIstons list of "finalist" candidates (LOL: Charlies Lee, Kevin Ollie and Jarron Collins), it doesn't appear their opening "looked a lot better than the Rockets". It's no wonder they plundered the treasury to buy Monty Williams out of retirement when no other team was even considering him.
