This seems like a much better idea than the what's in your cd player threads... i love buying new cds.. and yes i am an addict andmy wallet hurts and my ears love it !!!! and they love to hear from other music lovers on what cds are worth getting Have a couple of new cds to recomend 1. Dogs Die in Hot Cars - Please Describe yourself Damn this sweet, more retro like Brit pop/rock... this is a sensational cd... track 1 and the single God-Hopping is the most catchy and a reasonable reflection on the rest of the cd...loads of great songs and one that needs a few listens but i can see this staying one of cd player options for a while 2. Badly Drawn Boy - One plus One is One not sure about this right now have only had a few listens, certainly not as catchy as Have you fed the fish.... much more deep and detailed... more of the same from BDB is guess but more fuller 3. The LuckSmiths - saw them live last week and picked up another in their back catalogue and also a newish ep, if you get the chance and find them in a US record store try this catchy Aussie pop band... that right now are my favourite band.. just have any 5 of their cds on random in the 5 cd player.. great lazy saturday music... try em... look up www.candlerecords.com.au think they have some samples on their
1. Breaking Benjamin - We Are Not Alone Great album, their first single is getting airplay, but the entire CD is great. 2. Taking Back Sunday - Where You Want to Be Didnt know them at first, but their song "This Photograph is Proof (I Know you Know)" off the Spiderman 2 soundtrack is just amazing, the rest of the album is just as great, worth listening to. Like the idea Smeg, some artist need exposure and perfect thread for it.
If you want to stay away from main stream music, try going to www.garageband.com . Bands all around the US upload their music, and then we, as the reviewers, score their songs and rank the bands in several categories (ie Best love song, best voice, worst song, best alt. song, best rap song, best rock song, best punk song, and etc.). I've found several bands that I have absolutely loved by just previewing some of their songs, but it's all about preferences. You can even put some of the type of bands that you listen to, like The Vines or The Stones, and it will look for a band that is similar.
My current favorite bluegrass CD: Bela Fleck - Drive (from ~1987 I believe) My current favorite "jazz" CD: John Scofield - Bump Those should do you right and then some.
Best ten albums of 2004, so far: 1. The Plastic Constellations - Mazatlan Think Pavement, only much sharper. Like a herd of elephants. 2. Iron & Wine - Our Endless Numbered Days If you don't know by now... 3. Devendra Banhart - Rejoicing in the Hands Caracas-born, Texas-raised, San Francisco Art Institute graduate and former homeless New Yorker's first album culled from a collection of four album's worth of songs. Folk that ranges from unsettling to soothing to anthemic. 4. Adem - Homesongs Gorgeous campfire folk from former bassist for post-rock band Fridge. 5. Fiery Furnaces - Blueberry Boat Believe the hype. Huge, shameless suites a la The Who's "Rael". 6. Mirah - C'mon Miracle Female indie popster's most focused and listenable record. Acoustic strumming, electric grit, and lots of little Latin touches. And a protest song against Israel (she's a half-Jew). 7. Joanna Newsom - The Milk-Eyed Mender Voice of a small, whiny child. Most songs feature no more than a harp. Brilliant. 8. Sufjan Stevens - Seven Swans Religious folk. (Damn, this is turning out to be the year of folk.) Maybe our best songwriter. 9. Mutual Admiration Society - Mutual Admiration Society Glen Phillips of Toad the Wet Sprocket fronting Nickel Creek. 10. Of Montreal - A Satanic Panic in the Attic Best pop album of the year so far.
My two latest purchases are : Dead End Angels - November - I guess you would call these guys alt country or roots rock. Pretty good album, but they are even better live. Slapshifter - Demo-lition - A nice 5 song demo CD the highlight of which is Jeff's vocals on Barry Manilow's Copacabana. Because you know - "At the Copa, Copacabana The hottest spot north of Havana At the Copa, Copacabana Music and passion were always the fashion At the Copa....they fell in love. "
1. They sound nothing like Pavement, and are more like a 3rd rate Les Savy Fav. 2. Good record, but I would hesitate to put it in the top 10. 3. Just plain embarassing. He represents everything wrong with this entire"neo-psych-folk" movement. 4. Never heard 5. Horrible record. The first is decent, but this is just awful 6. Good record, but not strong enough. 7. See #3 8. I dodn't understand why this guy gets hype. His songwrtiging goes nowhere, ilicits no emotion, and his lyrics aren't so hot. The religious undertones don't help. 9. Never heard them, and based on your description this is a very good thing 10. That band is not, and never has been good. Quit reading pitchfork.
Actually, he's a Caracas-raised Texan and an Art Institute dropout. But he's great, despite sometimes sounding a little like Dave Matthews vocally.
DHB, that's twice now you've dismissed someone's musical tastes due to what you think they read. Ever thought that people just maybe have a different taste in music than you?
1. A third-rate Les Savy Fav would be the worst band on Earth. 3. How so? 8. If you think "For the Widows in Paradise, For the Fatherless in Ypsilanti" illicits no emotion, you're cold. 10. Wonderful band. Quit being a dick.
1,000 bucks says he reads pitchfork. and it's not that I don't realize people have variosu tastes, but his lists are always the current flavor of the month crap hyped by pitchfork. p.s. Dave Matthews Band
1. I agree, and that's pretty much what the pastic constellations are. 3. He's a steereotypical art school *** who pretends to be "mysterious" and sings with some contrived accent. 8. Maybe it could ilicit emotion if the songwriting were interesting enough to hold my attention for more than 10 seconds. Honestly, if Pitchofrk hadn't hyped the guy he would have sold maybe 100 records. 10. Probably the worst Elephant 6 band.
I do read Pitchfork. Here's how I found out about the bands I listed: 1. Pitchfork 2. KTRU 3. Pitchfork 4. Pitchfork 5. Music message board 6. Pitchfork 7. Saw her live 8. KTRU 9. Nickel Creek e-mail 10. Music message board How about contributing to the thread? That's be a nice thing.
Wow. And all this time I thought I WAS a musical snob. I can't hold a candle to this dude. Why don't you recommend some stuff, DHB, instead of dissing other people's choices?
Because that's what i do Ha. Sorry to sound like a dick. Music and beer are theonly things in life I'm a snob about. Don't take it personally (unless you listen to Dave Matthews Band). I'm working on a list. It's hard to think of 10 records released this year that are good enough to justify a top 10 list, but let's see... Arcade Fire The Ponys Mice reissue Black Sabbath box set Brian Eno reissues Vik Vaughn 2, and to a lseser degree Madvillian
Nice. I'm guessing you'll probably hafta wait about 2 months for the studio demo-type CD. BUT, we'll try to make some "bootleg" live CDs available for those who can't wait in the not-so-distant future.
