Wasn't sure this applied to the other Ipod thread going, but I was just curious what everyone's thoughts were on the two Ipod models available now. I'm in the market for one and am debating whether or not the extra 20 gb and dock are worth $100 to me. Just for background info, I have about 12 gb of music on my laptop right now (mp3/wma) and i listen to only 9-10 gb of it. I figure to add to that in the next few years though, which is what has got me stuck on the decision. Thanks in advance.
Do you think you'll be using the same MP3 player in the next 3-4 years? Maybe you will, but I know most people go through these things once every 1-3 years.
"Support" is a relative term. iTunes 4.6 (PC) automatically converts unprotected WMA to AAC, which work just fine on an iPod.
Bought mine on ebay for 450 Canadian Dollars(around 345US) for a 30G Ipod. Very nice condition with everything in it. But be aware, the sucky thing with the older model is that it last for only 4hrs of battery life!! Best thing is to buy it with everything in it. It's cheaper that way because buying other parts separately is pretty expensive. BUt you properly can get it cheaper on ebay for parts. The reason I bought it on Ebay because this person who was selling it was in the same city so it wasn't a big risk. It is totally worth it but I hardly have use for it that much. Like I've said earlier, the battery life is the BIGGEST disappointment. Depend on your budget I would say go for another brand.
well if he's getting the 20 or 40 he's gonna end up getting the newer model which has much improved battery life.. I'd say it depends on how much music you have, if you have hundreds of albums I'd say its worth getting the 40 gig just to archive all your albums into it
I bought a 20 gig Creative Nomad used off of Ebay for like $90, something to think about. I was about to get one of those 3gig IPOD like MP3 players they were selling at Fry's awhile back for $100. Checked Ebay and found that 20 gig for $90 shipped. So getting almost 7x the disc space for $10 less but used was a no brainer.
That's a good point. I'd like it to last me till I graduate (3 more years). That really would probably leave me needing only about 25 gig which i can easily cut down to the 20 gig size. I agree. The only reason that's not really gonna wind up being a priority for me is because i already have a usb memory stick. Just a few hours ago I discovered my school gets me a discount of about 30 bucks on Ipods. Add that with the fact that there will be no sales tax leaves me thinking I will step up and get the 40gb one off their site for $369. Thanks for your input guys.
Another thing to think about : people don't realize how fast time and technology flies. About 5 years ago a Celeron 400 was a pretty good desktop machine. Now it's junk. Whatever you buy, make sure the company that makes it will stand behind it with updates that support "the next music format". In 3 years, MP3 may be dead, MP4 may be on the way out, and who knows what else will be taking hold. Not to mention I think in 3-4 years, multi-function players will be way more prevalent - ones that play videos and MP3's as well as audio formats. Maybe they'll combine features like PDA, gaming, MP3, video, etc. Good luck finding what you're looking for.
One of the biggest reason that stop me to buy a mp3 player is the battery life. The Ipod is nice, but come on, you charge it for 4 hours, and only get like 8-10 hours of playing time? No way! As of today, if i'm going to buy a mp3 player, I would definitly go with Iriver IHP 20, more functino, longer battery life, solid build.
When you buy something like an iPod on eBay, you take a big risk. You have no idea how many charge cycles the battery has been through, or whether the previous owner has done all they can to keep battery life optimal. Personally, an iPod is not the sort of thing I'd buy second-hand. Hell, even if I bought a laptop not new, I'd anticipate having to buy a new battery for it.
The question isn't do you need the space. The question is if you want the accessories. The new 20G doesn't come with a remote or a dock. These two options are worth about 60-70 bucks retail. So, in reality, that extra 20 gigs only cost 30 to 40 dollars. Get the 40G. You won't miss the extra $100 once it's gone.
iTunes sucks major bohemian and archaic *ss. Did they fix the problem with memory hogging and poor sound distribution on a PC? I stopped using iTunes because of it and have been a loyal Winamp3 fan because of this. OK, so I don't own an iPod.
