Wow is all I can say. Just wow. Superstars influence games. For Wemby to will THAT San Antonio team to a victory over a "contender" is impressive.
This is the first game where the rest of the Spurs players looked like they actually knew how to incorporate Wemby into the offense. So many plays saw Wemby switch onto a smaller defender who got bullied into the paint. Then, the SA player with the ball just threw it up to where only Wemby could catch it, and Wemby didn't even have to do much and just laid it in. As others have said before, he's a cheat code.
Let the NBA defenses pick up his tendencies first before knee jerking. The kid is clearly talented and also a little raw about letting San Antonio get another generational big man but color me skeptical still.
The Spurs had the fastest rebuild in the history of the NBA. They are legit already. Wemby is amazing. I hate it...
Imagine if Wembanyama can build his body like Antetokounmpo did. A Wenbanyama who can also overpower opponents would be history's greatest monster. He's basically the next LeBron, except completely different. But he's similar to James in terms of that early impact and justification of the hype, and the flashes that made it clear he'll be the best player in basketball at some point in time.
He is already a better dribbler and better shooter than Giannis and is FIVE inches taller. Even if he never gets any better than what we saw yesterday, as long as he stays healthy he will be a perennial allstar. If he improves even just a little, the only player who will be able to compete with him is Jokic.
Sampson was nowhere near as athletic. Sampson was silky smooth, but compared to Mark Eaton. Wemby is already doing bizarro reverses and dunks 10 feet from the basket. Sampson could never do that.
Dillon Brooks did the best job defensively on him of anyone. Suns tried to replicate it with Eric Gordon and...yeah that didn't work
Eh. So was Wiggins, Davis, Towns and Zion. There is so much that goes into being an all timer and most stumble before getting there. Of recent Top 25 players all time, almost none were drafted #1 overall. Jokic and Curry are the most recent. Before that it's probably KD and Lebron. Being tall has downsides as well. Once teams scheme better it'll be harder on him. It always is.
