I didn't say that they did that to advance teams, it is simply a way of making the call quickly.

How about instant replay in the final 2 minutes of each quarter?

I always did wonder what the lyrics to that thing were.

You know, it is possible to be fouled on a jump shot. Just because they don't go inside that much doesn't mean that contact shouldn't be called.

The Ref's in the NBA are what I hate the most in all of proffessional sports. The inconsistency of calls year after year does make me think that their is something weird. Malone and Iverson complain and slam the ball all the time and the ref's will just ignore all that. Zone's wouldn't be needed if there was uniformity in calling the illegal defense but each ref all have different interpretations of what an illegal defense is. Props to Ray Allen for saying what needed to be said sooner or later.

Rigged or Just Plain Bad Officiating

    1. I don't think the games are rigged.
    2. I do think the refs have tough jobs. Their split second decisions on miniscule. micro phrased and detailed rules, with mitigating factors written and unwritten by the league are rehashed and replayed by every armchair coach watching. On Every Call.
    3. Referee errors usually occur as omissions,ie they miss a call on an obvious foul.
    4. During this series(as a case in point), the refs seemed to make a lot of calls as commissions (versus omissions) that retrospectively on replay were not remotely even close to a foul. eg. Cassell on the right corner defending Iverson against a trey where Cassell was not even close to touching Iverson, but Sammy was called for a three shot foul for the wrist. this all makes for fuel to the fires of the "rigged game "experts and skeptics. That also is part of the game.
    5. The league definitely prefers a large market versus large market contest in the playoffs. It's axiomatic. It's thier job .... promote the NBA game. Get advertising. Sell broadcast rights. This all means the guys with the money. Big Markets. Not Milwaukee. Not Salt lake City.
    6. I say again, despite this I don't think the league rigs games.
    7. I DO think the refs allow a player to work his way INTO their doghouse and he will eventually get some close calls called against him. (They rarely let them work their way out! Never in the same game.) Conversely, for those guys who are "pillars of the sport" they have to work pretty hard to get a bad call against them. eg. Barkley could say almost anything and get away with it. Francis only had to show a grimace and he gets the "T".

    Fairness in Sports:

Most sports contests certainly reflect life in some aspect. Afterall, if life is not fair, then why expect it to be any different in a contest of wills, talent and circumstance.

Democracy is NOT a natural phenomenae. It has no place in the middle of a sports contest. The decision to do something with a ball or puck or car is individually imposed by the ability to execute by the handler of the ball or puck or car.

"Fairness" has absolutely nothing to do with outcomes of either life or sports. "Luck" probably would be a more appropriate and recognized component of life (and sports) than fairness.

That's my soapbox for the day.

I would guess basketball is about the hardest sport to referee. IMO, the NBA refs are far more consistent than NCAA refs.
