wish i was old enough to watch the stros play in the dome. is that like the baseball equivalent to the compaq center?
Muhamad Ali vs Ernie Terrell at the Astrodome (1967) Ali recently converted to Islam and changed his name. Terrell refuses to acknowledge his name. Ali makes him pay for it in the 8th round taunting him by asking 'What's My Name!?'
1989 NBA All-Star Game Karl Malone erupts for 28 points, nine rebounds and two steals to lead the West to victory vs. the East. Michael Jordan did all he could to keep the East close, scoring 28 points, while Isiah Thomas (19 points, 14 assists, four steals) went toe-to-toe with Stockton at the point guard spot. This was the final All-Star game for Hall of Famers Moses Malone and Alex English, but marked the first All-Star appearance for Chris Mullin.
in 1987 after a day of tripping around Astroworld we bought some cheap outfield seats and settled in to enjoy the game. Next thing I know we're getting kicked out for smoking pot in the upper reaches of the stands. Guess that sort of thing was frowned upon. Does that count?
Was at the game Billy Hatcher was kicked out for using a corked bat. I believe it was Dave Smith's bat, lol.
Astros clinching the division during the live episode of ER (I was there) Oiler game being cancelled because of unsafe turf Kelly Leak's walkoff HR to beat the Texas Toros Buddy Ryan punching Kevin Gilbride (I was there) Willie Nelson concert after the last regular season Astros game to ever be played there (I was there)
When I was a tween we had seats for an Astros game that were about 20 rows from where Colonel Sanders sat. Must have been 1972 or thereabouts. He was introduced during the game and stood up and waved to the crowd as he got a round of applause. While doing so, he turned and looked towards where I was sitting and waved at me (back then, there were empty seats in every section). It was young rimrocker's first non-Astros celebrity encounter.
Me and a couple of buddies got a 20-game season ticket package back in 99 (last year Astros played there) and we had a sweet deal with the beer lady by our seats. We'd buy our first beer at regular price....then for the rest of the game, we'd just give her a dollar and our empty cups and she would refill them and just pocket the money. Good times.
As a kid at the rodeo saw Elvis, Roy rogers, Charlie Pride, and others. Biggest claim to fame was Cub Scout night on April 15, 1968...I forget what inning we had to leave as it was getting pretty late and we were just kids. Not to mention a school night.. https://www.astrosdaily.com/history/19680415/ 24 Innings, Six Hours, One Run By Vito Stellino From The Sporting News, April 27, 1968 (Houston, Tex) Baseball's longest night was filled with moments of humor, drama, dullness and frustration - but, most of all, it was a nightmare for Al Weis. Weis, utility infielder for the Mets who was filling in at shortstop because Bud Harrelson had a sore arm, let a bases-loaded grounder go through his legs to end the longest night game - and the longest scoreless contest - in baseball history April 15. The Astros and the Mets matched zeroes for what seemed forever before Bob Aspromonte's grounder skipped through Weis' legs to score Norm Miller in the 24th inning. The run gave the Astros an incredible 1-0 victory in a six-hour and six-minute marathon that ended at 1:37 a.m. (Houston time). No game had ever gone longer than 20 innings without scoring. No night games had ever gone longer than 22 innings before and that feat was accomplished last June 12 when the Senators edged the White Sox, 6-5. Gil Hodges was managing the Senators and had a victory to show for the long night's work. This time, as the manager of the Mets, he tasted defeat.
Most memorable non-historical night at the Dome was when my dad must have spent $5 on nickel beer night... He was so gassed he forgot where we parked and we had to wait for the parking lot to empty to find the car. Good times...
