We just have to bide our time until Track and Field starts. It used to be the eastern bloc would score the choice banned substances. Well Balco put an end to that sheet. Long live America!

are the olympics being talked about in another thread or is it just that no one cares? why does clutchfans.net hate america?

anyway, awesome 4x200m freestyle relay. US edges out those aussies by .13 seconds.

phelps looking good for 8 medals, US back on top of the medal count where it belongs. any other things to talk about?

I think the "Spoilers" part of this thread title has scared people off from discussing the Olympis here. They're not sure if they should start threads or not, probably. It should be re-titled "Official Olympics thread (No Spoilers)" Then people would just come and talk in here.

Anyway, that relay was awesome. It came out almost exactly as the announcer had been predicting all day. I'm really enjoying the hype around the swimming events this year. Hell, I'm even getting into the volleyball now.

My thoughts (I'm kind of a freak, I wathc all the coverage I can):

Phelps has been awesome despite the tremendous pressure and hype.

I felt bad for Lenny Krayzlberg when he finished 4th in the 100 back, I wanted him to at least medal it's hard to go from gold in 2k to 4th in 2k4. Props to Piersoll for winning.

Natalie Coughlin is pretty cool, I expected a bit more from her because of the hype but so far so good.

    The 4x200 free was awesome.

Amanda Beard has a sweet body, but man, she looks like shes got the crazy eyes there, looking like a psycho.

Props to American Judoka Jimmy Pedro. He came out of retirement to win a bronze (one of only two medals won by the US in Judo in the last 20 years -- the other was a bronze by him in 96). Anyway, he was totally jacked to just medal again, and he was interviewd by Pat O'Brien late night and was so happy to just even be on TV, and he wasn't just excited that he was on TV, he was excited that a Judo guy was on American TV. That's the kind of thing the games are about.

Huge showing by US Fencing - two medals upcoming. Also a great story, a lot of team members were kids from inner city Brooklyn, Queens & the Bronx -- there's a legendary coach here, Peter Westbrook, who was the last US medalist in 1984, who runs a program.

Gymnastics have been a little boring so far, expecting a bit more.

Overall cool games, the small crowds have disappointed a bit.

yeah, even though these guys do it so much you can predict what they're gonna do, it was kinda cool watching it all play out. he needs a 1 second lead, bam, 1 second lead. he needs a 1.5 second lead, bam, 1.5 second. he'll have something left against thorpe in the last 50, and he does. intense race. i guess we've been practicing our fundamentals more than the australians.

what i like about the gymnastics is how excited that one announcer guy (tim?) who used to be a gymnast gets and how much trust you have to put into his analysis of the whole thing. whether the scores were fair or too high or too low. i mean i can tell if someone stuck a landing or not, but when they'll point out some minor thing you didn't even notice and say it cost them .3 or something you're like damn, now i understand the scores a little more.

and i swear nbc needs to get back in the sports business (and not ND football and horse racing). i love how they cover everything. any other network doing the olympics wouldn't seem right and ABC doing the NBA still doesn't seem right. buy some more tv contracts, dammit.

Watching MSNBC just now, they are showing women's weightlifting. One of the anouncers just said, and I quote:

"If you don't get a snatch, you can't do a clean and jerk."

    Who names these events?:)

Man, sports is the only reason that I even miss having a television(and Turner Classic Movies). Otherwise, it's a complete waste of time. My love for the Olympics used to be up at stalker level. Nowadays following the action online, just can't draw me in.

If you get a chance, try to catch my cousins Olympic events. His name is Bennie Brazell, and he made the US Olympic Track & Field Team in the 400M hurdles.

    http://www.usatf.org/athletes/bios/Brazell_Bennie.asp

The times slots are as follows:

    Aug 23rd
    8 pm - 12 am
    400m Hurdles Round 1
    NBC

    Aug 24th
    8 pm - 12 am
    400m Hurdles Semifinals
    NBC

    Aug 26th
    8 pm - 12 am
    400m Hurdles Final
    NBC

Also, please pray that we don’t get bombed in Greece (I’m headed down this Friday). I’ll do my part to stay safe by not telling people I’m from Texas (Bush country). :)

I'm impressed with how many metals a diminutive ;) country like Australia can win.

Seriously, ya'll have less people than Southern Cal. You only have about two-thirds as many as Canada.

wow, paul hamm. takes a huge spill on the vault and amazingly comes back to take the gold. after his fall, i actually just watched the espn bottomline to see who won because i didn't wanna sit around and watch since he was out of it and when it said hamm at first i thought it must've been about another event. but i guess not. posts i believe a 9.850 and 9.837 on his final two events and wins by .0125. unbelievable. nailed the high bar perfectly and stuck the landing to pull it out as the last person to go.

i think US is leading the medal count 29 to 22 now.

when's the last time US didn't win? i think the US always wins.

i see some competition in 2008... but Chinese atheletes sometimes don't deal well with the pressure.

U.S. will always be the king of sports though. kids are playing at such a young age and there's a junior high school team for everything. That's why we're so awesome.

my parents never encouraged me to play sports when i was little because they were pretty traditional Chinese. lol... when i get kids i'm gonna be like the Roger Clemens baby!

"that's not a strike! are you blind?" haha.

don't worry that won't last. The only team that has a chance is maybe China. and they've wasted too many opportunities already.
