I just heard a mention that 610am has some new info on offer from the Rockets to Dream. More at 2pm. Old School ------------------ I voted YES!
Here's what 610 is reporting: Offered an extra year...3 years $10 million. Take it or leave it Dream...the time to decide is NOW. Old School ------------------ I voted YES! [This message has been edited by Old School (edited July 30, 2001).]
I have a feeling that he will take that offer... ------------------ Protrolls.com! Keep the ???? alive! The ZRBucks!
If he doesn't it proves he is a total ass and Rocket fans shouldn't say a word when he leaves. It is more than reasonable. Old School ------------------ I voted YES!
I'd bet the third is player option based on retirement. He'll be 41 years old by that 3rd year. I'm betting he won't take it. ------------------ Who's your buddy? Who's your pal? I am, aren't I?
Just to clarify....the third year is NOT for $2m. The 3rd year merely only "guarantees" $2m. For instance, if he retires after the 2nd yr because of injury,,,then the Rockets would only be obligated to pay $2m. His base salary must be equal or above the 2nd yr's base. The point is that for sure the Rockets could buy him out at $2m for "lack of skill." I'm not 100% sure what happens if he makes the squad. My initial reaction is that he can't be paid less than the base amount of the 2nd year. However, there might be a midseason termination date that allows pro rating of salaries. not sure.
Actually... look at it this way... Maybe they're offering him 3 years guarateed, with the understanding that he'll retire after one or two seasons... If he does, he still gets the money, but he doesn't count as much against our cap this year... If he stays all three years... then they just restructure when the time comes if need be... Either way he still gets at least $10 million dollars for playing 2 seasons... but he doesn't kill our cap this year... But does it work? davo? aelliot? ------------------ "There are three kinds of lies: Lies, Damned Lies, and STATISTICS..." - Mark Twain -
I think its a smart move by the Rockets. Everybody knows that besides the money, Hakeem wants to be respected and wants to feel wanted. With an extra year on the contract, and probably a player option like Jeff said, that should take care of the wanted part. And making it 2 million wont hurt us much if he decides to take that option. Fegan will probably try to get the Rocks to up the offer for the third year though. And if the Rocks do it, they will probably be hoping Hakeem retires after 2. But right now, its a smart move I think ------------------ Howdy Partner!
crispee is right it would seem. See the thread I started with the Chronicle article. The deal is worth $13 million. http://bbs.clutchcity.net/ubb/Forum3/HTML/014274.html ------------------ Who's your buddy? Who's your pal? I am, aren't I?
Old School, I did not hear 3yrs $10m. All I heard was that it was for 3yrs and $10m was guaranteed. Base salaries cannot got down more than 12.5%, nor can they be renegotiated downwards at all. That is why I am saying that their statement that the 3rd yr is $2m guaranteed, cannot possibly be the base salary unless the 2nd yr base is $2m as well. My guess is: <pre><font face="courier"> base yr salary $4m 1st yr $4m 2nd yr $4m 3rd yr with only $2m guaranteed against injury plus "Unlikely" performance-based incentives that have no cap hit until achieved.</font></pre> [This message has been edited by crispee (edited July 30, 2001).]
If this is true, then the Rockets shoudl give Dream a "drop dead" date. As in give us an asnwer by Wednesday or DROP DEAD ------------------ I'm off like a prom dress!!!
I think this is a good deal for both sides... If Hakeem doesn't take this deal, then I think it's pretty clear that he's just looking for an excuse to get out of town... This is a very good compromise by the part of the Rockets... My fingers are crossed... ------------------ "There are three kinds of lies: Lies, Damned Lies, and STATISTICS..." - Mark Twain -
Darkhorse, Got to agree with you there. No way Hakeem is able to perform yr. 3. This means only a $2.0 mil hit in 03. This still provides cap/exemption maneuverablility in the future. ------------------ He must have an enormous schfashtuker! Well, of course. That goes without saying.
I think this deal works out the best for everyone . 10m over 3 years doesnt break the bank . C'mon Hakeem You've been in Houston ever since you came to America . You can see New York etc.. after you retire . ------------------ S.O.S. Save Our Signatures!
The big question is does this still leave us cap room for the big free agent bonanza of 2003? ------------------
At least this way it puts out the immediate fire of losing him while we're strapped for cash this year... I don't consider it a mortal sin necessarily to be paying Hakeem $10 million dollars for 2 years... That's not a huge amount, and there's no one better we could get at that price... And if he's still servicable in 3 seasons... then great, we keep him... if not, (more than likely) then he still gets his money...
