Dampier puts Dallas back on the map.

I guarantee Yao is not happy about playing Dampier in Dallas. Dampier has always made Yao look like Shaun Bradley.

Though he played a lot of PG, Daniels was always looked upon as a 2 by the Mavs. Once again Mark Cuban manages to make chicken salad out of chicken sh*t. Whatever brain defect Danny Ainge had seems to have also affected Chris Mullin.

The really funny thing here is that the Mavs traded (dumped) Eschmeyer on GS last year in the Jameson trade and they are now stuck with him again. They actually now have 4 centers: Bradley, Dampier, Booth & Eschmeyer but only 2 can actually play ball without falling down.

How much are you willing to bet that CD will now trade for Eschmeyer because he'll come really really cheap? The guy the Rockets should be looking at is Booth but then again, it's CD running things so I'm betting on Eschmeyer.

Perhaps I'm in the minority, but I don't think GS got took by Dallas in this one. It was clear Dampier wasn't going back to GS anyway, so you expect any trade to be somewhat uneven talent-wise anyway. The other notables here are Najera and Dickau -- that looks fair.

The crux of the deal is how well will Dallas do and how much protection do those picks have. I still expect Dallas to be competing for the bottom 4 spots in the playoffs. Does that mean GS can expect two picks in the late teens? If so, the trade was worth it.

On a side note, that's the 4th time Dan Dickau has been traded in a 2 year career. He got the Stockton comparisons because he was a PG out of Gonzaga; so far, he's the anti-Stockton. (Maybe we should get him? ;))

The Warriors look something like this now:
    Fisher/Claxton
    Richardson/Pietrus/Cheaney
    Dunleavy
    Robinson/Murphy/Biedrins/Laettner/Najera/Popeye Jones
    Foyle/Davis

They do seem to have some extra 4s, with Biedrins being this year's lotto pick also being able to slide up the 5. They could use swingmen. (like Pike and Adrian Griffin, hehe). Robinson could possibly slide down to the 3 some (though he's lost several steps) or the 5. Najera can play some 3 as well.

I'd like to see what Swopa thinks they do with this roster. Pretty unbalanced imo, but not too bad at all.

We should get Najera. He will be a marketing bonanza and put Mexican butt into seat. :D :D

    Once again:

Michael Finley is NOT a good defender. He's very average. Since his arrival in Dallas his defense has done nothing but diminish. Understandable, though....given the teams reliance on his offense, his minutes played, and his age.

Both picks are likely to be after 2006 at least. Dallas has already traded a first round pick to Utah and they did not have one this year so that is a 2008 pick probably.

The other pick is a pick Dallas got via Atlanta who got the pick via Philly. That pick has so much protection that a ton of things have to happen for the team to get it by 2006. Most likely it will be a 2007 or 2008 pick.

Also, who do you think is the top four in the West.

I suspect there is no protection. But a the 5th or 6th seed in the West should be a low 20s pick--e.g., 24-22. Remember there are 30 teams now, Minny no longer has a penalty, and drafts are based on record, not initial playoff seeding.

It is an excellent deal for Dallas player talent wise relative to picks and player talent they give up. The only way the deal is OK for GS is that you could say they were going to lose Dampier anyway and it is cheaper.

GS is to Dallas as the Columbus Clippers are to the Yankees.

Also, just my opinion, but I thought even before this trade people were overestimating the Mavs free fall. This trade further this, Damp/Booth is a significant upgrade in their weakest spot, probably every bit as much makes up for a loss of Nash for Terry/Harris. They will have a fine regular season (50+ wins) and 1st round exit like most recent years. I do think Stack will have to have a great bounce back year for the Mavs to have any chance of advancing in the playoffs or getting a home court seed however--I don't see that happening unless the Rockets and Kings really fall..

Dampier is a tough physical matchup for Yao. He can score fairly well and is a pretty good defender and rebounder.
Dallas finally have a true center. This can help them go deep into the playoffs IMO.
It's bad news for the Rockets.

Dampier finally plays up to his potential in a contract year - then gets a big payday . . .

Anyone want to finish the story on that one?

I like the move from Golden State - the trade a guy they were giving up anyway, and get back a nice sparkplug type of hustle player - as well as an expiring contract, draft picks, and dumping another hideous contract.

That's helpful. Did they give the pick to Utah before or after the '04 draft? If after, then Utah could take it in 2005, protecting your pick in 2006 for 1 year (unless someone owes you one), and making the pick available in 2007.

As for the top-4, I don't have specific teams in mind so much (though obviously Min and SA are on top). I just think losing Steve Nash essentially takes them out of serious contention. His replacements don't have the experience to bring his veteran savviness as a leader.

There are two reports of trades by the Mavericks:

Dallas Morning News says Laettner, Eduardo Najera, cash and two future first-round draft picks are going to be shipped to the Warriors for the 6-11 Dampier and journeymen Evan Eschmeyer and Dan Dickau, assuming the deal is made official.

    But...

Fort-Worth Star Telegram says the Mavericks have agreed to ship forward Eduardo Najera, forward Christian Laettner, rookie guard Luis Flores, forward Mladen Sekularac and two first-round picks to the Golden State Warriors for center Erick Dampier, center Evan Eschmeyer and guard Dan Dickau.

    Dab nab it !!

How is Cuban able to give up crap and get good players in return?

Dickau is better than any PG on our current roster.

It's being reported that Dallas gave Dampier a 7-year, $73 million deal. Wow.

    It's official...Mavs ink Dampier to $73 mil!!!

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=1867027

    ESPN.com news services
DALLAS -- The Dallas Mavericks got a big man, completing an eight-player sign-and-trade deal Tuesday that will bring Erick Dampier from the Golden State Warriors.

    Dampier

In the deal, Dampier will receive a seven-year, $73 million contract, ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher has learned.

Dallas sends Christian Laettner, Eduardo Najera, two future first-round draft picks and the draft rights to guards Luis Flores and Mladen Sekularac to the Warriors for Dampier, Dan Dickau, Evan Eschmeyer and the draft rights to Steve Logan.

The 6-foot-11 Dampier averaged career highs of 12.3 points and 12 rebounds in 74 games last season for the Warriors. He was fourth in the NBA in rebounding, and one of just nine players to average more than 10 points and 10 rebounds a game.

Dampier opted out of his contract with the Warriors in late June and became a free agent after seven seasons with Golden State.

Donnie Nelson, the Mavericks president of basketball operations, was in Greece for the Olympics and not immediately available for comment.

A call to Dampier's cell phone was not immediately returned Tuesday evening.

While Dampier gives the Mavericks a much-needed big man for coach Don Nelson, Golden State achieved some objectives as well with the trade.

"We acquired quality players who can help our team now and several prospects that bode well for our future," said Chris Mullin, the Warriors' new executive vice president of basketball operations.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I know there was another thread started already but I thought $73 mil was significant enough here for a new thread.

The Mavs do not really have a backup PF but they are VERY DEEP in every other position now. IMO, they just got bumped up to top 5 in the West.
