To give you all the idea of what type of teams were hovering around Top 15 Defense last year. (Opp. scored pts)

The Rockets were actually a very bad Offensive team.

    15. Orlando
    14. Milwaukee
    13. Knicks
    12. Clippers
    11. Memphis
    10. Brooklyn
    9. Pelicans

    Defensive rating

    15. Denver
    14. OKC
    13. Brooklyn
    12. Toronto
    11. Lakers
    10. Minnesota
    9. Heat
    8. Sixers

I can think of 3 or 4 that will.
And perhaps more importantly, a new kid in our own division who isnt there yet, but in a few years?

Not important this year or next, but eventually, we will have to have a way to deal with those teams.

No, I mean a single player who can do ALL those things. There might be 1 or 2 other such players (Jokic, Sabonis).

Sengun and Landale can handle post defense just fine. It’s been decades since someone won a playoff series with low post scoring. Just not a large enough volume to matter that much. Not worried about that. More concerned about their ability to guard the perimeter and deter perimeter drives.

I will agree that team defense trumps specific matchups.

Yeah hopefully our defense is able to hold the fort much better this season and make the rim protectors’ job much easier.

I'm more concerned about the shooting / offense than I am the defense.

They are going to improve to middle of the pack defensively simply on talent and effort, not trying to lose.

The offense on the other hand - they were a bad shooting team last season that missed a ton of open / wide open looks. Statistically they got worse in that aspect and watching the training camp 5 on 5's reinforces that as they've been shooting a lot of bricks.

I think Tari shot the highest percentage from 3 last season of those on the roster today.

The shooting problem is overblown and you guys are all looking at it the wrong way.

Fvv over his career is a higher volume and better 3pt shooter than kpj, that’s an upgrade. Brooks is a better shooter than Kj Martin, and far better open spot up shooter. Sengun is actually going to be allowed to shoot 3s this year as opposed to being discouraged last year.

But really it all comes down to Jalen and Jabari, and we HAVE to assume both will improve at shooting, because for their archetypes if they can’t shoot then they are both busts, and if your #2 and #3 picks are both busts then your rebuild is an utter complete failure. So it’s either that, or we won’t have a huge issue with shooting next year.

The Rockets fielded this line-up to start the 3rd quarter and it looked pretty incredible. A very strong balance of size, offense, defense, rebounding and transition offense.

    PG: Amen
    SG: Green
    SF: Brooks
    PF: Jabari
    C: Sengun

Brooks is important here for the defensive coordination.

Unsurprisingly, these same 5 players had the highest +/- on the team as well.

You are going to end up being right, but not because of Reggie Bullock, who I expect to be out of the rotation after two months (replaced by Cam) but rather because of Tate rounding back to his all rookie first team shape. Between Fvv, Brooks, Jabari, Tari, Tate and Amen we got some DOGGZ on this team. Also people are going to find out that under the right scheme Sengun is actually a positive defender.

I know it doesnt mean a thing, being pre-season and all but, we are 3rd best in Opp PPG (95) and 2nd in PtDiff (+26).

Washington is first only because they beat a non nba team by +60 points. For all intents and purposes Rockets are 1st in PtDiff.

So far so good! Just the preseason. But I still think this is going to be a legitimately good defense. It's the right mix of elements to do it. I don't think we'll be a great defense (as in top 5, championship caliber) yet, that's going to take time. But I don't think being around the back of the top 10 is an unreasonable expectation at all.

    82-0!!!

Based on these two preseason games, I'm pretty confident that's our floor. Go Rockets!
