If he is not paid max here, he will get paid somewhere else, like LA.

I would be EXTREMELY surprised if Yao doesn't get the max.

Actually he can be extended after the end of this year. We can offer him the max after his third year, but it won't go into effect until after the fourth year.

Remember Francis was extended right before the lottery that got Yao which was after his third year.

My question is, aren't they going to renegotiate the CBA soon? Isn't there a chance that the max will be lower afterwards (because the cap is supposed to go down after this coming season, isn't it)?

I doubt the cap will go down but the owners are trying to shorten the length of the contracts to 4 years.

Yeah if the cap goes down, I don't see why the players wouldn't strike.

To be honest in some ways I am surprised it only took less than two weeks to get this done. If I remember correctly, Les said that August 4th was the earliest they could talk about any extension negotitiation with Tracey MacGrady :p but to get it wrapped up fairly quickly in today's world of player ego's trying to hold out for more I have to say hats off to both CD and Les

Now just lock up Yao for another 7 years and oh my I can't even describe the sheer extasy and joy that we rocket fans will experience in the near feature

Yes it does - after this season in fact. The problem is that revenues have been shrinking for the league overall and their TV contracts have been decreasing in value - something that had NEVER happened up until the last deal.

BUT, it is important to realize that most players who signed deals under THIS CBA will continue to operate under these rules unless the league agrees to go in an tweak every contract, which it probably won't do. That means, Yao will still be able to re-sign under these rules even if the rules change. The first group that it would effect would probably be next year's rookies.

What, you think the Rockets won't offer Yao the max? You must be joking.

I'm not sure this is so cut and dry. The whole reason Shaq got out of Orlando was because a change in that CBA granted players who were supposed to be restricted free agents unrestricted free agency.

I wouldn't be surprised if the restricted free agency on all rookie contracts was rid of for future years; what they do with the ones who would have it left is anyone's guess.

I do think that because Shaq left Orlando when he was freed from restricted free agency off his rookie contract, the owners probably won't allow something like that to happen again.

Regardless, it'd take some very strange occurances for Yao to leave Houston.

See? Tracy, Tracey. McGrady, MacGrady. That's why he demands to be called TMAC. ;)

Face it! TMac and Yao and a bunch of role players is what you are going to have for a long time. That worked for The Lake show and Rox with Dream. It will work again. Rings for everyone.

Nothing happened here until Cassell came along. He is no superstar but was definitey the missing piece. We have to be patient a year or twountil we get the right combo of scrubs and young talent to support Big Mac and Little Mac.

IMO most teams in the NBA shell out the max too often to players who don't even deserve it at all. Jason Terry for example did not deserve it at all. But, players like Yao and McGrady do without a doubt deserve the max. So to whomever asked the question; my answer is undoubtedly yes.

Jason Terry didn't come close to getting a max contract. He reupped last year for 3 years 22 million or something. Off the top of my head for guys that got max contracts that don't deserve it. Jamison, Marion, Eddie Jones, Brian Grant, allan houston, mighty mouse, etc.

go to hoopshype and click on the salaries link, on there they have a list of the highest paid players. it's stunning how many are not even close to deserving those contracts and you named a few who are definitely up there in the overpaid department.

then if you want a good laugh go look at the salaries on the knicks. now that's comedy (or tragedy depending on your POV).
