I’m not going to criticize Goss because I really don’t know anything about him, but I think we can all agree that it was highly stupid to make these comments to Michael Moore of all people.

'I don't have the language skills...my language skills were romance languages and stuff. We are looking for Arabists today. I don't have the cultural background probably,' he was quoted as saying in an interview transcript released on Wednesday.

'And I certainly don't have the technical skills, as my children remind me every day: 'Dad you got to get better on your computer.' So, the things that you need to have, I don't have.'

Goss in a bind over CIA nomination

WASHINGTON - President George W. Bush's nominee for CIA director, Representative Porter Goss, could be his own worst enemy when it comes to making the case that he deserves to head the US intelligence agency.

'I couldn't get a job with the CIA today. I am not qualified,' the Florida Republican told documentary maker Michael Moore's producers during the filming of the anti-Bush movie Fahrenheit 9/11.

The day after Mr Bush picked Mr Goss for the top US spy job, Moore released an excerpt from a March 3 interview in which the 65-year-old former House of Representatives intelligence chief recounts his lack of qualifications for employment as a modern CIA staff member.

Mr Goss, who served with the CIA clandestine services in Latin America and Europe in the 1960s, was not immediately available for comment.

The White House dismissed the transcript as 'ridiculous hearsay', and emphasised the depth of bipartisan respect for Mr Goss. He had 'very strong support from Republicans and Democrats, including Senator Bob Graham of Florida', said White House spokesman Trent Duffy.

Mr Graham is the former head of Senate intelligence.

Mr Goss appears in Farenheit 9/11, the most financially successful documentary in history, during a segment devoted to the USA Patriot Act, an anti-terrorism measure.

Moore told reporters that Mr Goss, who until Tuesday was chairman of the House of Representatives Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, had granted an interview to two of his producers without first checking who they worked for.

'You'd think the person who was head of the intelligence committee would ask a few more questions,' Moore said.

Mr Goss is expected to appear at confirmation hearings before the Senate intelligence committee early next month.

Privately, some Democrats have said the nomination puts them in a difficult position.

The CIA has already gone two months without a replacement for Mr George Tenet as director. The Democrats said that if they opposed the Goss nomination, they would be cast as obstructionists delaying prosecution of the war on terror.

In 2002, the Democrats opposed a plan to eliminate some protection for Department of Homeland Security employees. The Republicans used that to portray some Democrats as weak on defence.

One was Senator Max Cleland of Georgia. Republicans ran a TV commercial showing Mr Cleland, Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein with a voice-over saying Mr Cleland had voted against the President's homeland security efforts 11 times.

I do not believe Tenet had not resigned or indicated to that yet at this point. Goss was doing exactly what he should have done. Tenets job was secure at this point, if it wasnt Goss wasnt going to reveal that.

He doesn't need language skills, he's not the one in the field. It's a damn shame he doesn't know how to use a computer, but he can learn. What worries me is that while on the intelligence committe, he didn't seem to care when a CIA operative's cover was blown and didn't think it should have been investigated. On the Daily Show, they had a quote where he jokes "somebody sends me a blue dress and some DNA, I'll have an investigation..."

Did it really matter who Bush appointed to this position in Michael Moore's eyes? Moore will spout off his half-truths and lines taken out of context attacking whoever it is. Moore is a professional complainer and distraction. He also needs to drop about 100 lbs.

I believe Goss said these things about himself to Moore or did I miss something? Yes, Moore absolutely blows things out of proportion, but did he distort these direct quotes?

Why would Goss have such strong comments about himself if he truly felt the job fit his skill set?

It's a dangerous world out there ~ I could care less about the party affiliation of the new CIA chief, but he needs at the very least have confidence in his own abilities...

Because his weight has something to do with his opinions.

Reminds me of that political cartoon released after Farenheit 9/11 came out.

Reporter: So what do you think of Michael Moore's politics?
    Random Person 1: Fat!
    Random Person 2: Overweight!
    Random Person 3: Unkempt!

I may have typed the wrong adjectives (I'm almost certain I did), but you get the point.

He has been involved with the CIA for many years. He is clearly not a newcomer to working with the agency.

I know that Goss made the comments about himself, but without the benefit of the rest of the transcript you can't tell me that Michael Moore could not have taken his comments out of context.

Hell maybe these comments were just part of his act to dupe Moore and his merry band of liberal whiners.

I dunno. I respect a man who knows his limitations and is unafraid to criticize himself.

He may not have been the best person for the job, but you would hope he would be humble when approaching his duties.

He isn't being nominated to be a field agent, he is going to be the director. The skill sets are entirely different. I think someone who has extensive experience both in the CIA and in administration would be the ideal choice for director of the CIA. This is just Moore trying to be funny, and takig a jab at the president.

Moore didn't say he was unqualified. Goss himself did.

Yes, the skill sets for field work and administrative work are different. But it seems a logical choice for the person who will essentially oversee American security would be someone who has actually been in the field.

Of course, Bush dodged war and later sent others to fight, so field experience isn't very important to this administration anyway.

Now this does concern me. If this is true, then I need no other reason to oppose his nomination, as should any Republicans or Democrats. If he can be that flippant about some Administration idiot blowing the cover of a CIA operative, then he has no business running the Agency.

The end result to all this is that we all want the very best man for the job. A Republican Bush appointee will be the next CIA chief and personally I really don't have any problems with that ~ we just need to get someone qualified in place soon. My question is why defend and continue to promote someone who describes himself as unqualified for the job? Why not just pick another qualified Republican who is confident in his own ability to run the CIA…

Goss said he was unqualified to be a field agent now, and Moore is making the jump to him being unqualified to be the director. As for Goss, he used to be in the CIA, so he does fulfil what you think the logical choice would be.

I think he'd have difficulty running the organization if he's not in touch with what's going on below him. One of the fundamental tenets (no pun intended) of management is that those higher up need to have a good understanding of what's going at a lower level in order to effectively run their organization.

I am sure he has a good big picture idea of what it is that field agents are doing, having been a field agent himself. On the other hand, one of my worst bosses was doing the same job that I was (test engineer) while my other boss at the same company was not an engineer at all (background in business, I think) and was much better. Managers do not need to be qualified to do the jobs of everyone beneath them, they just need to have a pretty good idea what they are doing, and know very well how the skills of their workers fit into the organization.
