The far left of the Democrat Party had pushed for, and in some cases has had success in changing the parole system in some major cities in the USA, and has pushed for shorter sentences, even for violent criminals. There are even some on the far left that have wanted to basically gut the police forces in the USA. It is an incredibly short sighted and STUPID position taken by the far left - having said that, I have no idea and so far have seen no evidence that any of this had anything to do with this person's murder. If indeed the changes in the law did let this person out on parole early, then the criticism will be completely warranted.

i haven't heard of a good argument for why our entire concept of policing in America shouldn't be gutted. The United Sates is already the most incarcerated population on the planet.

The concept of uniformed organized policing comes from two raison d'etres one from the slaves states and one from the Norther States and neither raison d'entre had anything to do with protecting working class humans.

In the South, the formation of uniformed police is a DIRECT lineage of slave patrols. The EXACT same people who were in slave patrols set up the law enforcement systems post Civil War and no that isnt an exaggeration and makes perfect sense given the context. White Southerners just found themselves living amongst a population where the majority were former slaves they enslaved for multiple centuries. Of course these people are going to be deathly afraid of an entire group of humans that nearly outnumber them that despise them to their core because of the horrors those people went through at their hands. So of course it makes perfect sense that the ones who would rush to form a organized police system would be former slave patrols converting to the modern concept of law enforcement.

In the North, mass industrialization created a hard defining line between laborers and capital owners. Early 20th century saw a massive amount of actual violence between laborers and capital owners, like literally laborers storming hills against machine gun fire from security hired by owners. The conflict between the owners and laborers created a need from the owners for a organized uniformed state funded security element which was the only motivation for the formation of organized uniformed policing. What is funny is the first formation of these police departments had zero of the "hero worship" culture that you see with large segments of the population (most of conservative right wing America) today when it comes to their perception of law enforcement. In the early 20th century the perception of these uniformed police departments was the same perception as your typical street gang with the only difference is that this street gang was hired by your boss. They were seen as nothing more than security detail/street gang for business owner interests. They were the tip of the spear when it came to suppressing labor movements also.

The core essence of the reason why the modern concept of law enforcement exists today is rotten to the core. It will never be salvageable because the core intent of its existence comes from oppressing laborers/minorities.

Another aspect of this is how much Hollywood and media is complicit in converting the perception of law enforcement from beginning a street gang to these community heroes who "protect and serve' with mass influx of crime dramas portraying law enforcement as an entity that exists to solve crimes rather than protect capital interests starting with shows like Dragnet

I don't want to get into a debate about police and race

The reason law enforcement was first organized has nothing to do with law enforcement today.

Crime when law enforcement was first formed has nothing to do with crime today

Some people will re-offend. Some will not. It is always easy in hindsight to say somebody should not have been let free. Even in his case you could fairly wonder if the prison system itself was part of what led him to this point. There is no perfect solution.

We know a young woman is dead and that a monster is at large.

    @ROXRAN

    RIP to her
Baltimore is not exactly a safe place and I believe she lived by herself in a $1500 month apartment.
Don’t know the rent situation there but that’s really low rent.
And she’s a somewhat wealthy young white woman.

I know people who are too scared to live in downtown Houston . This is Baltimore

Gutting the police force will result in what we are already seeing - having to answer to authority and law is one of the few things that keeps the thin veneer or society from disappearing. The fear of consequences.

Now - mass incarceration, or decisions made concerning the purpose of philosophy or policing is a different issue and one that I believe needs to be addressed. Prisons are a money making opportunity for the private sector, and training and rehabilitation are missing from prison. There are a lot of things that they can do differently.

Organized policing existed before the USA and it is better than the alternative that existed prior to that where it was either the military or knights doing as they wish.

Organized police can be traced back thousands of years - I know they existed in Egypt nearly 5,000 years ago.

It is part of organized human socities.

Police have always existed in most societies once they reach a certain size. We had them in the USA in the 1700's, there were constables and under cover police. There were also volunteers, but they were proven ineffective with population growth.

The police were then for awhile largely privately owned by corporations and the wealthy - I have no desire to return to that.

Police forces have existed for thousands of years.

I have zero desire to have volunteer policemen, nor do I have any desire to have the military act as the police, nor do I want privately funded police - and I certainly do not want a society without a police force, as that is basically a Libertarians dream.

I am perfectly fine with changing the philosophy of policing, I am fine and support prison reform.

I am not, and never will be fine abolishing policing in the USA and I have no doubts that it would be a massive failure.

Likewise - I do not support no cash bail for violent crimes, or the minimization of prison terms for people with a history of violence or sexually motivated crimes.

I am a full supporter of police reform - not abolition.

Political science 101. Governments exist for protection. Protection from outside forces and protection from each other. It's the number one purpose of government

He had a substantial criminal records, including violence and sex crimes. He was sentenced to something like 30 years and was out on parole after like 10 years of less.

There is no perfect solution - but letting someone out that has a lengthy history of violence and sex crimes isn't CLOSE to even being the right solution.

I think there is a prison shortage. Are people willing to pay for more prisons and what it costs to run them?

Are parents willing to teach kids morality ?
I mean that’s one thing religion is good for .

sure this dude when he was a little kid didn’t see himself as a murderer and rapist

there’s some cultural issue going on
This doesn’t happen in other countries like Korea, the Middle East or even some countries in Europe

The criminal didn’t care she was a woke CEO BLM supporter, that status did nothing from likely getting her face caved in, her death was definitely painful and brutal involving blunt force trauma. What a waste of a life in her mid 20s RIP

An anti-policing, "anti-racist" (see Ibrahim X. Kendi) BLM supporter is killed by a man who served less than a third of his 30 year prison sentence. If you can't understand the irony, I don't know how to explain it to you, especially since your next post is about the exact point.

Some of the police officers undoubtedly came from slave patrols (why wouldn't they, there are overlapping skillsets involved, such as riding, tracking, locating people who don't want to be found, etc.) Policing itself has existed for thousands of years. There have been many names applied to it: guards, constables, sheriffs, watchmen, gendarmerie, etc. As long as there have been laws (the first codification of crime and punishment being what, the Code of Hammurabi in the 1700s BC, almost 4000 years) there have been people to enforce the laws. Such is the nature of laws. It isn't based on racial or class struggle. If the government (be it the people in a democracy, the monarch, or whatever body determines law in a society) establish that there are acts which require punishment, then there must be people who bring those committing the acts to be punished.
