Problem is, that's one of the main jobs of a manager....to not let the team get complacent, to not keep telling them that there is nothing to worry about and they can keep sleepwalking thorough the season. Dusty is an abject failure when it comes to literally every aspect of being a MLB manager. He always has been, but the Astros were good enough and hungry enough to win last year despite him....but having a garbage tier manager seems to have started to take a toll.
I have only ever seen the rule used when a throw is going from home to 1st base and the runner is in the way of a clean throw. I have never seen them bail out a terrible throw from 3rd when the runner might have been safe even with a good throw. The way that rule was enforced tonight was ridiculous. They definitely need to make some changes to the way it’s enforced.
Can we remove Dusty from the locker room and see how it goes? Like just tell him to go home and don't come back.
I can agree that the rule needs to be touched up a bit, but I have seen it called on that exact scenario before. That team was pissed too. I'm not sure exactly how you fix the rule, two people need to occupy essentially the same space at the same time, you can't have players plowing into defenseless first basemen, you don't want a scenario where fielders get bad throws bailed out by hitting the runner. Maybe you have a second "base" area to the outside for the runner and the current one for the use of the first baseman....but that would look weird. There's really no simple answer here.
