That’s the way I kind of feels but put up with it. My friends who want to eat McDonalds in Vietnam can while I go eat congee and Pho from street vendors.
I did live with an ex gf who had all sorts of food sensitivities. She couldn’t eat nuts or even food cooked in nut oils. She couldn’t eat spinach or onions. she could eat dairy and ate a lot of it while I’m lactose intolerant. In general we just ate different things at home and other than ramen or rice wouldn’t cook for her.
Ugh. Pho isn't even adventurous. It's soup. I ate a gyro with a coworker one time who was genuinely sicked out when I told her it's lamb and beef mixed. Like, Greece's answer to the hamburger. That was stepping out for her. Just the worst. I'll admit, I'm not the biggest seafood fan. Specifically, crab and octopus. Not a huge fish eater but flounder and catfish are amazing. Salmon is kinda meh. Tilapia, bleh. Indian food, I think is probably the furthest cuisine from American norms. But man samosas? Fried potato tacos. Delicious. Biriyani? Delicious. Goat meat is delicious, why that and lamb are so rare in America is a mystery and a travesty. Rabbit too, delicious meat. Wild hog, deer, delicious. Why we focus on chicken, beef only is weird to be honest. Buffalo? Ever had buffalo ribs? That's the choice man. People who will venture but not eat spicy? A lot of restaurants, particularly IN AMERICA will make it "white people spicy" if you ask. And you know what, when you ask for Thai spicy they'll give it to you and respect you for eating it, even if you sweat and cry to finish a plate. Like, have ONE spicy dish that you like to eat. Black pepper isn't spicy.
Haha, amazing!! I would have told her to pick the toppings off but... Being that you pulled a George move off, that's awesome.
POKORA mannnnnnn I think my favorite experience is being in some hole in the wall restaurant, ordering something and the waiter being like, "you sure?" Pokora is delicious as hell. It's french fries with spices on it. And that green sauce? Whatever the hell it is, it's delicious.
My kid was picky when he was really young (he’s 15 now). I always said to him……take one little bite. If you don’t like it, you don’t have to eat it. You may like it next time. There’s quite a few things that took him years to like, but it worked. We had so much fun in Asia at the beginning of summer. We ate all over Bangkok and Singapore. Even went on some adventurous food tours. Not sure either of us really enjoyed warm durian in that street market in KL, but damn if we didn’t eat some! It’s better when cold.
I once dated a girl from Iowa. I broke up with her for a few reasons, but one of them was that she couldn't eat anything because even black pepper was "spicy" to her.
I have 3 things I cannot ****ing stand: Dill Dill Dill It's the nastiest herb on the ****ing planet. It's great to plant amongst your veggies, because it keeps the ****ing bugs away, they know it sucks too.
I am the same way with my 13 year old. I have eaten a lot of stuff in my life and have tried durian about 4 times and I just cant like it. First time was in Thailand as well.
Thanks bruv. It's just crazy to me. We have to eat several times a day to continue living. Like everything, we've amassed thousands of years of knowledge on the subject of cooking. Flavors, techniques, and so on. Culture is so easily shared through cuisine too, who we are can be summoned to a plate. Stories can be shared, literally life can be shared. Cooking and eating brings me actual joy. And I feel constantly surrounded by people who say **** like "I don't eat Chinese food". What?! #1 Chinese food is delicious and #2 it's not the only country over there. Similarities exist, sure but every country does something different and beautiful. Like, if you enjoy "Italian food" but not Greek? Turkish? MOROCCAN FOOD golly gee willikers. Moroccan food and Italian food are surprisingly similar. I mean it's just on the other side of the Mediterranean Sea. You know, I've always felt like Tex-Mex as a cuisine is a delicious, natural expression of where we are. This mix of people with these ingredients. And then you go to certain places and it's so bad. How did you possibly mess up beans and cheese and meat? Seriously one of my favorite things is when I order something and the waiter says "uh, are you sure?" I just went to an actual Mexican restaurant and ordered a torta ahogado. Didn't really know what it was but the picture looked delicious. "My frieng, are ju chure?" Yeah why? He said it was a dish from his hometown and people around here don't really order it. I said hell yes and I know you have a hotter sauce back there and I want that one. Biggest smile on his face. It was a freaking carnitas sandwich covered in red sauce. It was so damn delicious. The hot sauce was verifiably hot too, and I know we got the real one because he had to find it in the lowboy, it was also a different shade of red than the regular sauce. It just kills me that instead of that experience... people want to eat tacos from Jack in the Box. Not even gonna class it up and go to Taco Cabana lol...
It's my life. I get it. I'm around food 10 hours a day. Then come home turn on Spotify, pour a vodka seltzer and a splash of Rabina. Then bust out the weapons needed.
I don't like things with the herb. But dill pickles are the ONLY kind I enjoy and absolutely love them. I could eat a meal of just those. They go well and accent many foods. But I absolutely hate other savory dishes that taste of dill.
I was on the line for about 6 months, buddy got me a job when things were things. I learned so much. It was not right for my family but the actual work was so awesome. Everyone should work a service job once in their life.
