Not sure why this has not been posted yet. I was away on vacation when it occurred and realize that the news is over a week old now. Pretty disgusting news and yet another black mark on UT athletics.

UT basketball player arrested for assault
Senior center charged with hitting girlfriend during July argument

University of Texas basketball player Jason Klotz was charged and arrested last week for assault with injury following a fight with his girlfriend, according to court documents.

Mona Rhodes, who identified herself as being Klotz's girlfriend for the past two years, said she and Klotz had an argument inside Klotz's car on July 3.

According to court documents, Rhodes claimed that Klotz slapped her, punched her in the face and then pinned her against the car door. Rhodes said that she then hit Klotz back, and that he responded by grabbing her by the neck and slamming her face against the car door.

An arrest warrant for Klotz was issued on July 26. Klotz, a senior, turned himself in to police and was booked the next day, according to a spokesman with the Travis County Sheriff's Office.

The assault charge is a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to a year in jail and a fine up to $4,000.

Neither Klotz nor Rhodes could be reached for comment. Klotz's attorney, Rip Collins, said Monday that Rhodes did not want the case to be prosecuted.

"(Rhodes) came and talked to me. The police filed anyway," Collins said. "Jason has agreed to any counseling or anger management that anybody suggests he might need."

In a prepared statement, Texas Coach Rick Barnes said, "We've talked with Jason and we all understand the seriousness of the situation. We will continue to monitor it closely."

Punk. I never liked him that much. With the stud freshman (en) coming in he'll probably see his p.t. drastically reduced or cut altogether anyway. Didn't like how Barnes gave him all of James Thomas' minutes, especially in Thomas' last ever game. Cut him (if this is true).

I don't know why, but grabbing a woman by her throat and slamming her face into a car seems a WHOLE lot worse than just slapping her or even punching her. What a prick.

Obviously this is terrible and disgusting news, but what are the other black marks on UT athletics? Not living in Texas anymore I don't hear as much about the program...

I am a UT grad, but let me preface this by saying my comments aren't meant to be in defense of just UT. Anyway, how are these grad. rates devised? I've heard recently that the graduation rates provided by the NCAA are seriously flawed, but I can't remember in which ways. I think one way is that transfer players count AGAINST the original school, even if the student graduates at his new university. And it doesn't even take into account why a student transfers. Also, are these rates just based on a student graduating in 4 years? Who the hell graduates in four years anymore? Some people, sure, but not many. The rates likely don't account for student-athletes who come back and get their degree at a later date.

Anyway, I'd just be interested to hear where the numbers come from. It may not make a difference relative to other schools, but it may help explain why some numbers seem incredibly low.

yeah I know there are problems with how graduation rates are figured some people think....

but no matter how badly they are or are not figured.. its embarassing for UT to have the 3rd worst..

I loved JT, but you have to admit that Thomas was the one who seriously sucked this past year. It was extremely frustrating and disappointing, because he was an All-American candidate before the season started, and I figured he'd continue his ways of dominating the boards. While he did that at times, his offense seemed to regress, while Klotz became UT's only consistent low-post threat, with that baby hook of his in the paint. Sure, Tucker was solid down low, but his size left his shots open to being blocked by weakside help, and Buckman disappeared last year. As much as I'd like for Thomas to have been better than Klotz last year, it simply wasn't the case. Even when Thomas played okay, he was in foul trouble all the time. Maybe his injuries held him back all year long, I don't know.

Thomas' back injury didn't really heal all season long - so his productiveness wasn't there.

Not sure exactly how the grad rate is figured.. I believe transfer count against you..... but I'm pretty sure you do get more than 4 years to graduate.. 6 or so I think?

I understand why the transfer thing etc could be a problem.. and I'm not trying to compare UT to the top 10 or so which are a lot of academic schools, but even the other good football schools have a better mark..

it's a shame he didn't try to hit her with one of his shots from the xavier game, she'd have been safe then.

shamelessly pounding small private schools from houston in baseball when they really stand no chance.

A big, strong one. At least, one who was bigger and stronger than the woman in question.

I think that just follows logically.

Unless he knew kung fu, though. If you know kung fu, you can be a wiry little guy and still pound other people (women included).
