I just heard them talking about it on a local radio show. $39.95 a month, unlimited local and long distance calls. I think it's only available inside the beltway but will go to the surrounding counties the first of the year. http://www.timewarnercable.com/houston/products/digitalphones/default.html Seems like a good deal I just wonder about the quality.
my big thing is when the power goes out you don't have phone access. also, does it only work with one jack in your house? meaning you'd have to get one of those expandable cordless systems to use it in multiple rooms?
I've had it for 2 months now as a beta tester. The only difference I notice is my phone bill is lower. Quality is indistinguishible. Lack of quality has not even entered my mind (or my wife's) once. Part of the instillation is they jump over the phone jack so it connects the whole house. You are thinking of Vonage that only has one jack. (But even w/ Vonage you can jump your phone jacks to cover your whole house...you just have to do it yourself) Power: I have mine hooked up to my UPS I had so I'm protected for short outages. But I also have a cell phone (that I can charge in my car) so I'm not too worried about the extremely infrequent long term power outage. The only problem, if you can call it that, was the switch over. I was able to make phone calls but they had a glitch that prevented me fron receiving calls. I notified them after 2 days and they promptly fixed it.
how do you jump the phone jacks with vonage? has anyone tried vonage? i just got it in my house, i noticed some quality issues but i cant tell if its the cordless phone or the service (i havent used the phone except maybe once or twice yet)
Green wire goes to green. Red wire goes to red. Go to Radioshack and they'll hook you up. There's a number of ways to do it. Here's one. Buy an externally mounted phone jack. Pull the original house wires into the new one (remember red/green). You might need to sacrafice on old phone card and use it to extend the existing line. Plug in the router into the new jack. Plug in your phone to the old jack. Then your whole house will work. Again, there are any number of ways to do this. This is maybe the easiest. BTW, since I'm beta testing, I'm only paying $29/mo. And I didn't have to do ANY installation. It all just works. Vonage is cool but you're out on your own a little too much.
The guy from TWC said they use the jacks already installed throughout the house. The modem is put in the room you have your computer in. They said the installation takes about 30 minutes. If I keep hearing good reports I may switch to this once it's available in Fort Bend.
