I don't require anyones sympathy, there is a certain amount of laziness in my obesity. I do think it is a positive thing to have a good, healthy, fit body. And I think it is a nice accomplishment to lose large amounts of weight, just like I think its a nice accomplishment to read to improve ones mind.

Not many perfect people out there though, and if you have a well sculpted physique more power to you, your flaws must be in other areas, and I hope others aren't so quick to mock you for yours as you are to attack people for obesity.

Even self inflicted (to some extent) wounds do hurt, and humanity comes in all shapes and sizes.

 

Anyone else feel the urge to go for a run after reading this thread?

 

I am going to have to disagree with you there. Fat people are not part of humanity.


People like DragP and Manny talk about turning their own self-loathing against other people like it's some kind of virtue. If you overcame a weight problem, good for you. Just because you did does not make you a good person, or gives you license to be a jerk. Overcome your empathy problem and you might actually deserve some credit.

Does it seem like to you that America is completely insane about issues of health and sex? No place on earth has more fat people and no place on earth has such an obsession with being thin. Same thing with sex- there is a totally puritanical attitude towards sex co-exisiting with a positively sex-drenched society. At the same time that people were fretting about presidential blow jobs as if the concept itself was unbelievable (talk about historical, as well as social amnesia!), the American media/entertainment industry has been making female sex symbols younger and younger. The pedophile meter on Britney, Lindsey Lohan, the Olsen Twins struck magnetic north a long time ago.
The mixed messages about food are even more amusing. Just look at an hour of advertising. You will see thousands of adjectives like honey-dipped, choclate covered, carb-free, deep fried, low-cal, meat lover's, diet, healthy and cheesy side by side. You will see these almost pornographic slow motion images of pizza being pulled on a plate followed by a Weight Watcher's commercial. Just a question for everyone- what is it about our society that causes such contradictions? Is it like that in the rest of the world?
