I love it. MS Office always seems so bloated, overly complicated, and intrusive to me. AppleWorks just, well, works. I'd write more, but I gotta go drinkin'. One last thing: AppleWorks allows you to save into multiple file formats, including MS stuff.
Can't stand it, and a refresh is definitely needed. I do almost no work in Office-type applications, but I've always MS Office on the Mac to be perfectly usable.
I use MS office at work but Apple works at home. Works just fine. I agree that it is need of an update though.
It sucks... used it for the past 3 years, It sometimes tries too hard to be better than Office, but ends up getting real confusing and makes me wanna slam the laptop across the room... get Office
AppleWorks calls used to be the most frustrating I used to get. When it would pop up on the caller ID as APPLWRKS que I used to say "aw, sh!te" and another Tech would look over and say "What is it, AppleWorks or something?" The calls always sucked. For the most part it was grape iMac grandmas that were too cheap to get MS Office. It is super limiting, it is SEVERELY outdated, and in my opinion should be dumped. A majority of Apple Techs would agree with me.
That's too bad. With all the money you dish out for a Mac, it should come preloaded with better software.
iTunes, iMovie, iDVD, iCal, iPhoto, Garage Band, iChat, Safari, preview, text edit, font book, graphics converter, Apple Mail, Stickies. All nice programs for free. Remind me again of all the nice free software you get when you buy a pc.
It costs a lot, but Office is the best suite out there, IMO. I still think that Keynote is a better software than Power Point, but, in reality, Macromedia's new Breeze is going to blow them all out of the water (no pun intended ). Word is buggy at times and I freakin' cannot stand how it codes HTML and even forces that on you in cut and paste, but that is Microsofts crappy issue in trying to integrate it with Frontpage, which is a piece of crap. (rant over) I LOVE Entourage as an email client and calendar software and the new version has project tracking that just looks awesome.
Jeff, Have you dropped the dime on the Office 2004? If so do you think it's worth the upgrade cost? Thanks.
Those are all nice add-ons. Apple has some really neat products, and they play well to their niche. However, the majority of customers care about cost first and foremost.
Not yet, but I have played around with it. Everything I've read suggests that Entourage is definitely worth the upgrade. I'm certain I will get that. But, I'm not sure whether I will upgrade the whole suite or just Entourage and Word. Those are the main things I use. The only times I really use Excel or Power Point are when my clients send me files and I need to open them. From what I've read and seen, Entourage is definitely worth it and Word is probably worth it. The new layout views in Word look sweet. Check out Macworld's review of Office X 2004. They do the best reviews anywhere and this one was in last month's issue.
Don't buy the new Word/office until the .1 version comes out. The current version is MUCH buggier than its predecessor. The new views aren't worth the hassle. Appleworks is OK, but OpenOffice would've been better. There are rumors a new version is coming. I haven't launched PowerPoint since I got Keynote.
I got it free at work and it is has some sleek improvements. Entourage has a couple of unresolved issues when dealing with a MS Exchange server, but other than that it is very nice.
