The giant aquifer under Death Valley is going to be overflowing if the worst case scenario plays out... I wonder if we'll see temporary lakes form in some of the old dry lakes in the area?
This is the lamest ****ing line of thought. People in California aren't used to this in the same way Texans aren't used to earthquakes. Grow up and hope that everyone makes it out of this ok.
It will be interesting to See if the Salton Sea and Mono Lake can recover some as those are disappearing fast.
When I was in college there was also a tropical storm SW of CA. I remember it being really humid in LA and driving through a really strong rainfall from Tijuana back to SD. The Californians were freaking out as they weren’t use to that weather but to me it was just like driving through a Texas rainstorm.
I was reading on Twitter about non weather topics and this was reposted. So took it as a sign that I need to post it here.
The problem is the ground here is so dry it’s like concrete and is a recipe for flooding. That and it’s hard for the ground to absorb it all at once. It’s likely to cause more damage than it’ll help unfortunately. But yeah.. right now I’d take my chances. It just seems as though the heat dome is turning into a permanent thing overnight. Is it scientifically possible for the heat dome to become a constant and turn central, north, and parts of south Texas into the same terrain as West Texas?
For giggles I took the temp of my concrete patio about an hour ago when it was 108 here. The temp reading was 132F. I'm actually surprised it was "only" that much. I thought it would be around 140F. I don't know how accurate a temp gun on concrete is or how much the reflectivity is affecting it considering it was saying my fence planks were over 150F but the metal fence posts were "only" 127F. Death Valley, CA is only 76F right now. What I wouldn't do for some torrential rain right now.
A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck 80 miles northwest of Los Angeles on Sunday as rains from Hilary’s outer bands soaked the area. Video from inside a Mexican restaurant captured the chaos as the quake hit. https://weather.com/news/trending/video/earthquake-hits-southern-california-as-hilary-dumps-rain
