Good thing I'm an Anerican football fan. I was not too worried about the strike. American football season started in like a few weeks.
I gave up MLB cold turkey and haven't looked back since. Started watching pro soccer,EPl, world cup soccer anything to do with soccer and I wish I would have started earlier. I will never ever care for baseball in any way, hell the astros could sweep the yanks in the world series and it wouldn't matter one bit to me. Especially after they were thinking about going on strike a year or two ago. One sign said it best during this time, a fan about 50 or 60ish had a sign saying " If I can quit smoking I can quit baseball". Hopefully the NHL and the NBA can learn from their stupidity.
On a related note, I was at Shea stadium on Tuesday( Astros game) and I walked by Don Fehr's box. He wasnt there, but his name was on it on a placard.
Gave up on baseball years ago mainly because of the strikes and major/superstar players being rented for 1 year to win championships, and other players flipping teams every couple of years. I'll watch the Comets regularly before I watch or attend an MLB game - and probably not fall asleep in the process.
I remember this day well. It was my last day of work as an intern at the Houston Chronicle...getting ready to go back up to college. I left work early that day...and went directly to the Dome for a day game. Remember, the Astros finished 1/2 game back of the Reds that season...I got there around the 6th or 7th inning...bought a cheap seat and walked around to a better seat. The game ended. And everyone kinda sat there for a minute. The Astros lost the game. They played some appropriate music, but I can't remember the song...about leaving something unfinished. Left the Dome feeling like baseball just blew the best chance my team had in 8 years of making the playoffs. Would have been worse had I been from Montreal! I love BASEBALL. I love the game. Strikes...labor disputes...big contracts...none of that removes the game, itself, for me.
I was on a plane in Canada, on my way back to Los Angeles after an Alaskan fishing trip with my Dad. He was an Astros season ticket holder from the mid70s through the early 80s. He has not paid a dime to see MLB since 1994. Each time he has gone has been from tickets I have been given that I gave to him.
I couldn't imagine being a Montreal fan that year. We weren't going to do much because we had just lost our best player.
