Shocking! An actual documented story about Kerry...

Former GOP Sen. Hecht owes life to Democratic candidate Kerry
    By Kirsten Searer

    LAS VEGAS SUN

Former U.S. Sen. Chic Hecht of Nevada is a staunch Republican, but he thanks his lucky stars for Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts.

On July 12, 1988, Hecht was attending a weekly Republican luncheon when a piece of apple lodged firmly in his throat.

Hecht stumbled out of the room, thinking he might vomit but not wanting to do it in front of his colleagues. Sen. Kit Bond, R-Mo., thumped his back, but Hecht quickly passed out in the hallway.

Just then, Kerry stepped off an elevator, rushed to Hecht's side and gave him the Heimlich maneuver -- four times.

The lifesaving incident made international news, and Dr. Henry Heimlich, who invented the maneuver in 1974, called Hecht to say that had Kerry intervened just 30 seconds later Hecht might have been in a vegetative state for life.

"This man gave me my life," the 75-year-old Hecht said Thursday.

Hecht said he was amazed that Kerry acted so quickly -- some people were assuming that he was having a heart attack.

"He knew exactly what to do," he said. "But a lot of people know what to do. They just don't size up the situation immediately."

The story has a twist of irony: Hecht was up for re-election that year, and Kerry, who was serving as the chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, had pegged Hecht as one of the most vulnerable Republican seats.

Indeed, the Democratic nominee for Hecht's seat, then-Gov. Richard Bryan, beat Hecht, who served just one term in office.

"Only in America can this happen, where he's working against me to get me defeated and then saves my life," Hecht said.

Hecht, who prides himself on having one of the most conservative records on the books during his six years in the Senate, said he and his wife, Gail, see politics as "a secondary issue" when it comes to Kerry.

"We've had a wonderful life, and it would have all been down the tubes," said Hecht, who is about to celebrate his 45th wedding anniversary with his wife.

Every year the Hechts call Kerry's longtime personal secretary, who tracks down Kerry wherever he is.

Then they recount some of their experiences in the last year. Hecht and his wife thank Kerry for thinking so quickly in the Senate halls that day. And Kerry tells them that their phone call is one of his favorites of the year.

"He's so nice and appreciative," Hecht said.

This year Kerry was taking a day's vacation from campaigning, and he told them that he thought his campaign was finally gaining momentum.

Some of the Hechts hope so. Both of Hecht's daughters have attended Kerry events, and Gail Hecht hopes to travel to California the next time Kerry is there to voice her support, Hecht said.

Still, Hecht points out that he and Gail have given the maximum possible contribution to President Bush's campaign ($2,000 each). Hecht, a longtime businessman and banker, served as President George H.W. Bush's ambassador to the Bahamas.

Soon after the Iowa caucuses, a former Los Angeles county deputy sheriff and Republican Jim Rassmann stood with Kerry at an event to tell the story of when Kerry saved his life in the jungles of Vietnam.

Rassmann, a Green Beret, was ambushed along Bay Hap river, but Kerry, who also had been injured in the attack, grabbed Rassmann's arm and pulled him to safety, according to Kerry's website.

On Wednesday, Roll Call wrote a story about Hecht's incident. So far, Kerry hasn't asked Hecht to appear at a campaign event, but Hecht said he would if he were asked.

Hecht won't, however, say who he would vote for in November if Kerry wins the Democratic nomination.

"Only the Good Lord and myself will know how I'm going to vote," he said.

Pfft. We need accounts of these stories from people who stepped into the building after the situation was resolved. They apparently know better.

Agreed, particularly since the source is Anonymous he has always been right on with his insider material. This is exactly the info I needed to put me firmly in the Bush camp ~ one would never see the Bush family fussing or fighting in public.

KERRY TAMPERED WITH APPLE THAT NEARLY ENDED SENATOR HECHT'S LIFE

    **Exclusive**

Well placed sources confirm that an apple that caused former Nev. Senator Chic Hecht to nearly choke to death was tampered with by Senator Kerry.

"It was a long term plan, just like his plan to go to Vietnam and earn medals for a future political career" a a top and completely anonymous source said.

Apparently, Kerry learned of an assisination technique from Green Beret's in Vietnam where they expertly cut a piece of fruit so that a larger chunk than what a person bites will enter their mouth and cause them to choke to death.

The source insists that Kerry has the precognitive ablities necessary to have chosen the correct apple and knew exactly when to take the elevator that let him off at the precise moment that Hecht was nearby.

One wonders why Kerry didn't use his precognitive powers to prevent 9/11...

    Thanks for the kind words.

It is of utmost importance to verify the emotional make-up of our presidential candidates. Shouting down a woman, in my opinion, indicates a flaw in character. Where there's smoke, there's fire, people. I want somebody who will stand strong in the face of adversity, just like GWB stood tall after 9/11. I can't trust Kerry to do the same.

What does that mean? How do you stand tall against your wife in an argument? Slap her around and make sure nobody knows?\

how do you go from the "heated argument" phrase used in the Drudge piece to "shouting down a woman?"

I use the same reasoning for supporting Kerry. When Bush dropped his dog, in my opinion, it indicates a major flaw in his character. A person must value living things to the highest regard and not handle them carelessly. When there's smoke, there's fire people. I want somebody who can cherish the lives of his fellow living beings, just like how Kerry saved a fellow soldier in Vietnam. I can't trust Bush to do the same. (parrot talk off)

you do realize, this news only sounds good to people who have already made up their minds. Aren't the undecided voters sick of partisans emphasizing ad hominem attacks? give them issues, man, just because they don't follow your leader as devotedly as you do does not make them simpletons who will change their minds on an incredibly stupid, unverified anecdote. Same goes for those touting that Bush had a hand in 9/11. this tactic simply sets back our development in democracy and surely doesn't make us look any less petty in the rest of the world's eyes.

sorry, but WTF??? sums up that paragraph for me. they got in a fight...thats all. have you ever got in a fight and got into a shouting match with your wife or significant other or whatever?

god its their freaking business. you could also say drug use and alcohol abuse indicates of a flaw of character.

and what in the world does the where there's smoke there's fire comment mean? because he got in a shouting match and they stayed in seperate rooms? i guess that was very immature of themselves to stay in seperate rooms so they wouldnt fight anymore.

I think I'm on your side on this, but you are conceding too much. We don't know that Kerry and his wife even got in a fight. We know that drudge is reporting that they did. Drudge shamed a young intern by claiming that Kerry had a romance with her, when it turned out to not be true at all.

If Kerry and his wife got in a fight, they wouldn't be the first married couple to do so, but we don't even know if that happened at all.

"big texxx likes to watch p*rn all day because he has triple x's in his choice of usernames (indicating a willingness to use double meanings), thereby he must, if he had any, not must be of good moral character, and is unfit with children and should be consigned to view women only if they are veiled because apparently he can't control himself"

    Ok, I'll bite.

    A) I agree.
    B) I haven't heard this anywhere else in the news. What would be the flaw?
    C) What is this supposed to mean? What is the "smoke"? (I'm assuming it's the alledged and uproven sleeping in different rooms. How did you get "shouting down?" And how does the "smoke" relate to the "fire"? What is the "fire in this case"?
    D) Sure, I agree. Please tell me how GWB stood "tall". What does standing "tall" mean? Did he stand tall before 9/11 or just after 9/11? (D) has no logical relationship to points (B) and (C) and only a cursory relationship to (A).
    E) has no relationship to any statements you've made above except to serve as a foil to statement (D), which is uproven and unsubstantiated.

Either you posted this because you wanted to create controversy, to engage in arguments for their own sake, to tarnish a presidential candidate's character whom you do not agree with nor like, or because you were not thinking whatsover and decided to cut and paste from a very partisan muckraking source because it would be "fun" to do in this election year. Whichever one it is, I don't see how this post can add any value to the more important issues that will affect our country (e.g. international relations, security issues, stalled economy, environment, social security, education, integrity in the political process, etc.) not to mention world issues that deserve more bandwith than your drivel (e.g. sudan famine and violence, palestine-israeli conflicts, etc.)

But by all means, you have the freedom to post and say whatever you want. Bravo for exercising your American right to free speech so well.

yeah you are right...i think i was just reacting from what he said. i know drudge isnt the most reliable of reporters, but i think i was responding more to the fact that if it was true that bigtex even thinks it would be an issue of character. it seriously baffles me how tex can say something like that with a :D or a ;)

so anyhow... WTF??? still describes my feelings on tex's opinions.
