He will push his limits again. The dude just can't stop his mouth, and gets off on seeing how much he can get away with. I can't even imagine what a spoiled crybaby he was as a child and teen. I imagine he has always been an attention seeking obnoxious brat.

This seems to summarize the Judge giving trump some leeway...

But the Judge reinforces that leeway can't violate the previous orders given and denies any changes requested by trump's defense

That said, everyone seems to know trump will continue to violate these since, well, trump doesn't have any respect for the rules of law.

She laid out the law, and Trump better not mess around. He is his own worst enemy.

The former president has a right to free speech, but that right is “not absolute,” the judge said at a hearing Friday.

“Mr. Trump, like every American, has a First Amendment right to free speech, but that right is not absolute. In a criminal case such as this one, the defendant’s free speech is subject to the rules,” Chutkan said.

“Without a protective order, a party could release information that could taint the jury pool, intimidate witnesses or others involved in some aspect of the case, or otherwise interfere with the “process of justice,” she added.

Chutkan said that “the existence of a political campaign is not going to have a bearing” on how she handled the case. “I intend to keep politics out of this.”

I guess my point is that these are the same "laws" that existed and were clearly stated previously, and trump violated them right away, multiple times, continuously. I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't make a speech or makes a social media post later today that violates him. Until he is actually punished for violating things he will continue to do so. He has so respect for the rule of law or any other American institution.

I like the "nail on the head" exchange -- that was pretty funny.

It's a reasonable ruling from the judge, IMHO, and also would seem to deflate the already-unfair BUT-JUGDE-NO-FARE!1!! HATE-ME-WAAA!!1!1 bullshit. Not that conspiracy nonsense needs deflating.

My read on this is the judge is basically giving Trump rope to hang himself.

-Trump hasn’t been given the discovery yet so there’s no evidence yet that he’s violated the terms of his release based on what a protective order would protect in terms of evidence and witnesses.

-They can still proceed to negotiate on a normal routine protective order but the court won’t mandate it absolute yet.

-Trump if he violates the law by intimidation of witness or obstruction will absolutely face consequences. He’s been warned twice now. How severe those consequences are we’ll see because you and I know he’s going to take this inch and try to throw it 100 miles.

-This gives Trump a small delay in negotiating a protective order and every little delay matters.

-Hard to see a trial happening before next Summer and possibly into the election. The judge is going to let team Trump use tactics to delay if it’s within their rights.

And also to B-Bob's reasonable analysis above. Its a shame that the other judge doesn't seem to be taking a balanced approach. If anything, she is violating the norms by releasing confidential discovery herself and saving trump the bother

The judge’s ruling seems sensible, but Trump will likely violate it, leading to their return to court for another protective order. By the way, what happened with the Trump lawyer’s attempt to delay this hearing to next week? Did the judge reject that request?

She did, but split the difference. The special counsel said they could have the hearing this past Wednesday or Thursday. Team Trump wanted NEXT Tuesday - whenever. The judge said Friday, and that's final.

The ruling is setting up a big "I told you so" from the Special Counsel when he inevitably violates the rules. I suspect Trumps lawyers actually secretly wanted the judge to put that protective order on him today so they can control their client. Now he's been warned twice, and has rope to hang himself.

It was a sensible ruling. One looks like a win on it's face by team Trump but really in the longrun is actually bad for Trump. There's just no way he'll be able to control himself with the amount of evidence he's about to get access to.

This seems important. trump and his legal team were attempting to have witness testimony as "non-sensitive" so they can attack witnesses (or have witnesses attacked). Imagine having to protect witnesses from the leading republican candidate? The Judge shot that one down. Of course, that assumes trump will follow the rule of law...

Exactly, give him enough rope and he will inevitably screw it up, but you have to error on the side of giving him too much leeway because he will use it against the judge
