Diaz in the outfield …. Why ? We have Tucker Chas Myers and Alvarez …Dubon… all more capable . Why not just double down on catching understood and appreciate your response. Just think it would be risky to try Diaz in the OF going into the playoffs - where defense is a premium — I would just then have him DH and Yordan in LF. I guess it doesn’t hurt to “audition” him there
Diaz is a better hitter than Meyers by a lot. Meyers is the better defender. It would seem Diaz would help more at 1B. Unless Brown intervenes, I expect we will see more Dubon in the lineup over Meyers than Diaz in the lineup over Meyers.
They worked him out there and played him some there - but someone, I don't remember if it was Baker or Brown or the positional coach, made a comment about not liking him at 1st base.
I am skeptical he is going to come up and 1) get much playing time or 2) set the world on fire even if he does, but Singleton getting a shot almost 8 years after being released from the team is pretty damn cool. Feels like a lifetime ago, getting call backs to Matt Dominguez and Brett Oberholzer.
It was baker. But he finds a reason not to play Diaz all the time anyway so who knows. He got One game. I didn’t think it was tragic. Our regular there isn’t exactly a gold glover.
I've always wanted them to try Diaz in LF. He obviously has plenty of arm, and he moves pretty well, better than Yordan from what I can see. Part of the reason they play Yordan at DH is to keep his knees good. If him and Diaz can split some of the LF work that would solve the problem of getting him and Yordan consistently in the lineup without needing Yordan to start too frequently in the field. MMP in particular is a good place to play them with the short porch. However, in parks with more ground to cover I don't think Diaz's offense makes up for Meyers greatly increased range, if it does it isn't by much IMO.
Nook has said Diaz already has the most meetings of any player. He doesn't need to burn any focus on defensive versatility right now. Just needs to play C more. (c'mon Dusty).
Astros were working with Diaz at LF often during the playoff last year. Maybe in case of emergency if one of our OF starter go down.
Would be the most Astros thing ever if Singleton has a career turnaround post Astros debut and becomes a version of the guy the Astros thought they were getting.
Remember when writing "it would be the most astros thing ever" meant an anvil was falling on our head? I member.
I mean, I agree 100%, but I also live in reality. Maldonado is the guy whether we like it or not. Sunday would have been the perfect day for Diaz to take over Urquidy, but it was Maldonado. Maldy is also 100% gonna catch Framber, JV and Javier when it matters.
Imagine if Singleton were to make good and next season there were 20-30 games with this lineup: 2B Altuve 3B Bregman LF Alvarez 1B Abreu RF Tucker C Diaz DH Singleton CF McCormick SS Pena
Maybe they can start Framber, JV, Brown and France in the playoffs? Maldy catches, Yordan in LF, and Diaz @DH for Framber. The other 3, Chas in LF, Meyers in CF, and Yordan at DH. Maldy catches JV but Diaz catches Brown and France Chas and Yordan play all 4. Maldy plays 2 Diaz and Meyers play 3.
