To sustain greatness, you need a solid farm system that keeps churning out MLB caliber players and a few key trades.

This is likely the vast majority of players that will play at least through the 2025 season:

    C - Diaz (Trade)
    1B - Abreu (FA)
    2B - Altuve (Farm)
    SS - Pena (Farm)
    3B - Bregman (Farm)
    LF - Alvarez (Trade)
    CF - McCormick (Farm)
    RF - Tucker (Farm)
    OF - Julks (Farm)
    OF - Meyers (Farm)
    UT - Dubon (Trade)

    SP - Verlander (Trade)
    SP - Valdez (Farm)
    SP - Javier (Farm)
    SP - Brown (Farm)
    SP - France (Farm)
    SP - Urquidy (Farm)
    SP - Garcia (Farm)
    SP - Blanco (Farm)
    SP - Bielak (Farm)

    RP - Pressly (Trade)
    RP - Neris (FA)
    RP - Abreu (Farm)
    RP - Graveman (Trade)
    RP - Stanek (FA)
    RP - Maton (Trade)
    RP - Montero (FA)
    RP - Mushinki (Farm)
    RP - Gage (Farm)
    RP - Martinez (Farm)

    Out of these 30 players:
    Farm - 19
    Trade - 7
    FA - 4

That is a breakdown no other current successful team in MLB can brag about.

Now all of a sudden we seemed to have solved our question mark at catcher, CF and another starting pitcher. This is how you sustain success.

I don't know the exact numbers, but aren't Baltimore and Atlanta built the same general way?

Those are definitely the first 2 teams I would look at to see if they can approach our breakdown.

Just one little nitpick - Gage is not from the farm. He was a waiver claim from Toronto

There are a couple teams with a similar break down - but what makes the Astros rare is that they have had year after year of roster turnover filled with players from the minor leagues.

That is VERY rare. Even the teams great for 5 years or the rare few for a decade like the Braves in the 90’s and those Jeter Yankee teams - their situation was different because they didn’t lose their best players to free agency like the Astros have - Cole, Verlander, Correa, Springer, Morton, Graveman,

Left off McCullers. Sad what injuries have done to him.

    LUHNOW

The franchise earned it with the 100-loss seasons, but you must execute too.

He was so awesome his presence will be felt for a decade.

His demise was one of the worst things to ever happen to the franchise.

This implies that Brown can't come close to doing what Luhnow did for us.

I'm definitely not in agreement with this prognosis.

I would guess so. That's really good company going forward.

Its telling that the Astros alone had 28% (7/25) of the international players in the postseason last year and were tied for fourth of the drafted players. I shake my head when people poo-poo the farm system, because it's obviously amazing and doing it's job in both growing talent for our own team and for good trades.

Seth Martinez was not drafted by the Astros. He was Rule 5 pickup from the As.

I'm a bit shocked that Tampa Bay's roster wad almost entirely from trades, given all the talk about their drafting skills.
