It's hard to gauge him properly since he was not put in the greatest position to succeed. He's a system player and did the little things when he was playing for his national team. We really didn't have a system unless u consider silas forcing kpj to role play as the pg of a "free flowing" offense a system. He doesn't need ball handling skills, all he is need is an actual passer to spoonfeed him buckets.
They were traded for Dillon Brooks (part of the package). Then the cap space freed up was used to sign all of Landale, Jeff Green and Holiday. I prefer Brooks, Landale, Green and Holiday over fatty Garuba and co. When considering we have 6 rookie scale guys who need vets to help them develop, I ESPECIALLY prefer Brooks Landale Green and Holiday over the guys we traded.
I'm okay with losing him when we're replacing him with higher potential rookies and highly competitive vets, but I really was hoping to see how he fit with Udoka. I feel like Udoka would understand how to utilize a guy like Garuba. I'm sure he'll be fine, whether he sticks in the NBA or goes back to Europe where he has a proven track record of contributing at a high level.
Out of Christopher, Tate, Martin, TyTy, and Garuba; Mr, Garuba is who I would most want to stay on the team. In my opinion he will be a valuable bench player for at least several more years.
I'd love him back. Wasn't he our best 3pt shooter last year (obvs off not many attempts) Wish he'd been given an opportunity. TyTy too. I understand why the other 2 are gone.
I think he could be really good in a system. What we played the last two years was the opposite of having a system. No structure, a head honcho and another young guard doing whatever the **** they wanted, a confused coach, team was tanking, etc. I saw Garuba play in the Euros for Spain, where they won the championship. Was he the superstar of the team? Absolutely not. Was a crucial part of them winning the championship? Absolutely yes. He knew where to be, he showed that he is actually a great passer, and he did great on defense.
Meh. He'll have a nice career overseas somewhere. I always thought he'd end up trade filler, but I do like the guy. Unfortunate all around.
Meh, even if they signed hm, I don't think he'd get any playing time. I wish him well, but he just never proved his worth at any point
The Team determined the horses that are going to pull the wagon, and Garuba isn’t someone the Rockets top brass views as an essential member. With information available, at best Garuba will be a decent role player. And the Rockets can’t sit around and coddle his development. The Rockets need established bodies to which is what they got. Garuba seemed like a nice fella, but it was time for the Rockets to let him go and for them to move towards their next phase in the reconstruction of the team.
Yeah - I had the same read on him. Honestly he would probably be a nice “buy low” candidate for a contender with a set system in place to use him as a rotational big - maybe the Warriors or Nuggets using him to make passes out of the post similar to their starters. I liked his passing skills but Silas had no idea how to implement a real offensive system - let alone how to “activate” Garuba within it. One just has to look at how much Silas brought Jabari into our “system” to understand how disconnected our system was from the players who were supposed to be executing it.
Typical "Mirsad Turkcan" situation, too small for his NBA position, no additional skill for smaller positions but hungry/ambitious/hustling guy. Turkcan, 6'9" PF drafted by Rockets, played for Knicks&Bucks (sharing the bench with curent Lakers coach Darwin Ham and late Robert "Tractor" Traylor) no success and returned to Europe to become the first player to grab 1000 rebounds in Euroleague history.Same fate waiting for Usman. Wish him luck wherever he plays, either in NBA or more likely in Europe. I like Garuba but bringing TyTy back must be priority. One year or three years time, does not matter, bring the boy back.
Sorry, I thought he and Garuba were a stretch as first rounders. He’s a good scorer but doesn’t do much else.
Just curious, anyone remember his financial situation? I remember he had to negotiate a buyout with his team in Europe just for a chance to make it in the NBA. For his sake, hopefully he comes out of it net positive even if he has to go back to Europe. From pure basketball standpoint, I agree with most of you guys, he just hasn't shown the level of improvement NBA-level talent calls for
His buyout was roughly $3.5m. He’s making at least $7.4m from his rookie contract, with a 4th yr TO of $4.3m.
