I have asked the same question before. People not looking at the individuals play style, just the color.

Yeah but the advanced metrics say he's white and he should be able to do some of the things good white players do.

It will be fun to watch the two of them a little closer at RGV. They can both shoot. Day definitely has a more nba ready body, but I was disappointed in his rebounding in summer league. Mayer looks to have a really quick shot and great confidence in his 3 pt shot, which will bode well if we need scoring off the bench some day. We are just so deep, I just don’t know how any of these guys are going to get a shot. On the defensive end of things, Hinton has outshined everyone but Cam in my opinion. Cam needs time on the NBA team this year. KPJ and Tate must really be contributing and playing hard to survive past the trade deadline.

I'm seeing a sort of Steve Nash Larry Bird hybrid.

Comparing 2 SL games to 100 college games is ludicrous. Crème always rises to the top and rocks always fall to the bottom. Happy this guy opened some desperate eyes on this board, but now it’s time for the team to sign a backup combo center/power forward as I’m not comfortable with Tate backing up the two positions as he’s too short and a boring player.

I like what I’ve seen as well, but what we’re seeing is a kid with 4 years of college ball development. It shows.

I was going to say something, but held back. Wasn't sure if the poll choices also served as a joke/sarcasm. Mario Elie's Rockets career had a respectable 36% 3p%. Aaron Brooks in his six HOU years was 37% 3p%.

Could have snuck in at least one black player.

We have two roster spots available, plus the two-way contracts (Hudgins and Days). I’m gonna assume that a good player shakes loose from some good team during the roster trim right before the season. So that’s one spot. Given how Stone feels about Boban, it’s possible he gets that final spot (I personally think that’s run its course). You’ve also got the possibility of one of these summer league guys taking that last spot (or a two-way). Mayer, Hinton, and Samuels are the candidates there.

Mayer really looks like he has an all around game and is a smart player. He’s not a turnstile defensively, he’s got athleticism, size and a very good stroke. He could have a chance to stick as a role player in the nba.

We pay 37 year old Green 16 million for his leadership and you don’t want to keep Boban at league minimum for his vet leadership. Green was another huge overpay waste. Love the guy, but you could’ve almost had Austin Reaves with that kind of money.

I didn’t say anything about Green. I think it’s insane we are paying him almost $10 mil to play for us. There were much better uses of that money, I don’t care if the guy is Captain America. Overall he’s a net positive but paying him that much is stooge-like at this point in his career.

Mayer’s ceiling is a Larry Bird sized Garry Bird

I’d rather see a real G like Fletcher MaGee or Nate ‘Steel Balls’ Hinton rewarded with a 2 way

Magee seems the much better shooter. Mayer is probably better at everything else.

    Matthew Mayer, Houston
I have been a Mayer fan since he was a key piece of Baylor’s 2021 national champions, but he seemed to level off from there and went undrafted after a meh fifth college season at Illinois. However, he was arguably the best unaffiliated rookie at summer league.

As with Devoe, Mayer didn’t get his chance until a lottery pick went out of the lineup; he DNP’d Houston’s first game but was pressed into service when Amen Thompson sprained his ankle. Mayer responded with 19 points and 10 rebounds and finished Vegas with a 71.5 percent true shooting mark. The 6-foot-9 forward took 23 triples in 101 minutes but also showed up big on the glass with a 14.5 percent rebound rate.

He’s not just some big lug roaming the 3-point line either; Mayer can handle the ball and move. His college shooting numbers have never caught up to the eye test on his shot (33.9 percent from 3 career; 68.9 percent from the line), so this could be a fluky outlier week, but if Mayer can shoot consistently, there’s a place for him on a two-way at the very least.
