Now the NYT adds, "If he did not, the guarantors would be on the hook for the entirety of the $500,000 bond." Implication being they didn't need a bail bondsman? Is this some kind of sweetheart deal? In my limited experience with bailing people out, it costs actual money and you can't say, "don't worry, I'm good for it!" I don't really understand what is going on there.

Also, per NYT, there was a third guarantor that pulled out rather than be revealed. Maybe this third guarantor was the monied interest that made it possible for two blue collar workers to feel like they could make a personal guarantee? I have no idea.

This is speculation on my part but perhaps Santos’ Dad and Aunt have been given some other enticement from another party.

I think it’s also Santos being the fabulist that he is wanted to create an air of mystery around who his benefactors could be while also given himself a chance to play to the base by attacking the media..

I thought everyone knew about 10%. People are usually posting large bonds on big cases in the news. I don't get media's fascination with this aspect of the story

Citing the full bond amount is like reporting on the maximum possible sentence. That one drives me crazy. 'They want to give him 90 years!' But, the prosecutor will probably ask for 5 and the judge will sentence to 3.

If you pay the non-refundable 10% to a bonding company, the bonding company is still responsible for the total bail amount should the defendant not show.

Or defendants could come up with the entirety of the bond money themselves and "save" the 10% bonding company fee.

This is what politics has become these days. Don’t apologize, double down, and blame others.

The concept of shame doesn’t exist anymore.

The Trump administration opened the door for him by normalizing not just a new scale of lying but also new heights of shamelessness when caught in the lie.
