Considering these are rookie pitchers for the most part, and Yainer was catching them in Corpus Christi and Sugar Land... there's much more of a pre-existing relationship with these pitchers than Maldy has...
The newbs haven't had time to be indoctrinated yet. Hunter Brown started the same way, but alas I think they got to him already.
Yainer has a .970 OPS when playing on the field..catcher or 1st base. Halfway through the season and we're not making the most of this trend unfortunately.
Brown has allowed 1 HR in 34.1 innings with Diaz. He's allowed 8 in 56.2 innings with Maldy. He went from lights out to getting shelled.
I get the sentiment of feeling like something is being left on the table with Diaz with the way he’s being used. It seems like he def could be pushed/played a little more. But does Dusty get zero consideration/credit for putting Diaz in position to succeed in limited time (and leaving people clamoring for more) rather than being given a full time role and possibly being either overexposed/used and burned out for the play offs? Diaz got barely a third of a season of AAA and minimal major league at bats last year. He’s definitely never come close to catching a full season. all things considered, I’m just happy Diaz is performing well and leaving people wanting more now. feel the same to a lesser degree about Chas. If these moves are all made with the long game in mind, I’m fine with it. I 100% do not believe Dusty fails to see Maldy’s shortcomings.
Maldy should only catch for Framber. I would like to see Diaz catch for Javier and once again for Brown full time.
Random question for baseball nerds. How much does being bilingual matter for being a catcher, if a catcher only speaks Spanish what’s the mound visit sound like? Not trying to trigger anyone, genuinely curious.
No Dusty does not get any credit for holding Diaz back. Brown had to negotiate with Dusty to get him the at bats at DH.
Brown said that the Astros needed to find Diaz more at bats in an interview and a week later, he got to DH. https://climbingtalshill.com/posts/...lash-over-opinion-of-yainer-diaz-01h2be9mrzgr
