Marisnick is a very fair comp for Meyers. And we already remember the hand wringing we all experienced when Hinch played him way too much.

Marisnick had an elite glove. Just couldn’t figure it out at the plate

    Of course not.

But in my opinion Corey is a AAAA player.

My definition of that is a player that is in AAA when your roster is at full strength but an injury replacement and in the bigs if there is an injury.

Julks has been on the Astros all season, but would be in Sugar Land if Yordan and Brantley had been healthy all year.

And after this huge hot streak he is on, he is on the cusp of getting to MLB avg in hitting. Another great game gets him there.

I am very happy with his last 6 weeks, but I would be surprised if this isn't his ceiling and he isn't less effective most of the next 5 years.

Even after today, he still has less than 1 WAR for the year (0.7 bWAR and 0.6 fWAR before today)

    Coming into today:

Chas: 1.6 bWAR and 1.4 fWAR in 180 PA.
Meyers: 1.2 bWAR and 1.4 fWAR in 227 PA
Julks: 0.7 bWAR and 0.6 fWAR in 237 PA

Apparently I'm not the only one who thinks Julks is considerably less valuable than the other 2.

I agree Chad and Meyers should get most of the time but several folk on here act like Julks is straight trash below the Mendosa line type hitter. I think given he is a rookie he has done pretty good, especially on the road. If he could raise his MMP numbers he would be everyday player for several teams.

Sadly uncle Mike is toast so I hope Julks keeps improving when given the chance.

For them record I think Chaz should be everyday. He earned it last post season and hasn't done anything to make me want to go another direction.

Goes 4-5 and batting .274 now…but lets die on the advance analytic hill. I don’t give a **** about . WAR. He is playing much better than Meyers.

Since June 1, Julks has a .795 OPS in 99 PAs. Jake is at .583 in 78 PAs.

Which one has been more valuable the past month?

Julks has had a great month (a great 6 weeks actually) while Meyers didn't. Meyers was terrible with the bat.

(but Meyers still provided overall positive value due to his elite defense while Julks' negative defense continues to drag his overall performance and value down)

Its a good thing that April and May don't count. Lol.

Of course the entire season counts, but if a player improves and is playing better than his competition should he be being used more? In the same vein, should the Astros still be looking for a first baseman?

Most people use the definition for a AAAA hitter to be a successful AAA hitter that has bad luck succeeding at the next level. 0.8 WAR in 242 over half a season is good backup range. Julks had a 108 wRC+ in AAA and has a 100 wRC+ in the majors (that is not the dropoff most associate with a AAAA hitter). Having an 100 wRC+ is not on the cusp of MLB average in hitting. It is average. Currently, Julks is 159th among position players in fWAR. In other words, on average, teams have 5 position players better than Julks out of 9 (counting DH as a position). A lot of guys get hurt, but health is a skill younger players typically have.

On future performance, yes, he likely won't be a 4-WAR player going forward like the pace he has been the past 6 weeks. 4-WAR is a really high bar to determine if a player is a AAAA. Less than 0 WAR or 0.5 WAR in a season might be a good measure for a AAAA.

Caveat: As always, the future is unknown. Julks may completely suck and be a AAAA player going forward. That said, he would have to perform worse at the MLB level and better than he has at the AAA level going forward.

Maldy has reset the Mendoza baseline from 0.200 to 0.170

should it be called the Maldonado line now?

Bielak and France..our "worst" starters just went 7 innings with Yainer catching..

meanwhile Brown, Blanco and Javier struggled to go even 5 innings with Maldy catching......

My idea of a AAAA player is Brandon Bielak.

A guy who doesn't completely suck, and can have some great moments but isn't good enough to keep a spot in the majors. He spends 5-8 years going back and forth from AAA to MLB, finishes his career with about 5 or 6 organizations after arbitration makes him too expensive to keep, and you don't hear from him again.

I am pleasantly surprised that Julks has had such a good year. And very happy.

That said, As an average (at best) fielding LF only player he needs to be at least 15-20% above league average with the bat to justify his starting spot. He isn't there yet, but I hope he does.

If this team was fully healthy all year, he would be in Sugar Land and would not have even made his MLB debut. And if the team gets another OF via trade or Brantley returning then he is still the one who should be optioned down. Unless Chas or Meyers are traded away.

Just think of the intangibles of Julks rookie energy and Meyers redemption energy.
