Blackmon signed that extension after the 2017 season, and the Rockies lost in the Wild Card game that year. They weren't terrible... yet.
Hunter brown for a 35 year old goldschmidt with another year left in his contract? What? You can't be serious?
I'm not saying I would do it. I said that's what it would take. The Cardinals have no reason to trade him and don't want to. They aren't making the playoffs this year with or without him, but he could still be a major reason they do make the playoffs next year. if they don't need or want to trade him, its not happening unless a team drastically overpays for him. That's why Goldschmidt is a fool's dream.
https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id...t-handed-hitting-crucial-october?platform=amp In the playoffs it absolutely matters. There are relievers (and starters of course) who have extreme splits that are very tough on righties but are hittable or even bad against lefties…with the three batter rule this matters. Secondly, the better mix you have, the harder it is for a starter to get in a groove. Generally speaking they’re going to throw a different arsenal vs. each side of the plate. If you had 9 right handed hitters in there, it makes it easier because that’s at least one or two less pitches they have to worry about throughout the start. Rarely does a pitcher have every pitch working for them throughout a start.
Here's an under-the-radar pitcher who (could) be available: Logan Gilbert. He does not fit the high-spin model that the Astros have historically pursued, but he is a durable power pitcher with plus command (similar to Gerrit Cole). Seattle is several games back, and would still have Castillo, Ray (when he returns from TJS), Kirby, Miller, and Woo, plus Hancock and others in the waiting. Yes, this would be a division trade, but there aren't really any other good controllable starters on teams that are out of contention. I'd take 190 innings and a WHIP around 1.000 for four more years after this.
Seattle maybe being out of conention this season doesn't mean they've given up entirely on this group. Trading a solid team controlled starter would be stupid unless they were getting a team controlled superstar bat in return, meaning likely Tucker or Yordan As we've brutally found out this season, pitching depth is not to be taken for granted because it can change on a dime.
Reading that the Astros are gauging value for Pena and McCormick and Diaz made me take another look at who might want them and what their value might be. With the emergence of Dubon and the presence of Meyers (with Gilbert on the way) it might make some sense if they get an overwhelming offer. Here’s a couple hypotheticals that might be fair and make some sense: Marlins get: SS Jeremy Pena RP Seth Martinez Astros get: SS Joey Wendle RHP Max Meyer LHP Jake Eder RP Tanner Scott SS Khalil Watson Marlins get a long term SS and a backfill for Scott, Astros get: 2 Top 100 pitching prospects with ace ceilings, an elite RP with another year of control, a very high upside IF prospect, and a capable rental utility guy who can handle backup SS duty behind Dubon. Then a 3-way trade, Astros get: OF/1B Cody Bellinger SP Kyle Hendricks OF Alek Thomas Diamondbacks get: OF Chas McCormick Cubs get: SP Drey Jameson SP Slade Cecconi 1B Ivan Melendez RHP Forrest Whitley Resulting Astros playoff roster: 2B Altuve LF Bellinger 3B Bregman DH Alvarez 1B Abreu RF Tucker C Diaz SS Dubon CF Meyers Bench: Maldonado, Wendle, Julks, Kessinger Rotation: Framber, Brown, Hendricks, Javier Bullpen: France, Urquidy, Stanek, Montero, Maton, Neris, Abreu, Scott, Pressly
I still hope the Astros don't trade either player but there are very few players/prospects that have real value, this team has serious needs, and trades are going to be VERY expensive in this market. Or do they just stand pat, hope for the best and try to reload for another run next year?
Stand pat and hope for the best? I say when Yordan returns the offense will be superb. Maybe Urquidy comes back as superman for some reason and he mows em down in the remaining regular season thru the playoffs. That would be a scenario. Javier seems to be less than last year, hope he can get er back. JP France is getting er done if you ask me. More competition is going to be fun (if we win!)
I think, when Yordan comes back, this team will be fine offensively, as long as there are no injuries. Abreu and Bregman have returned to their normal productive selves. Altuve, Yordan, and Tucker gives this team 5 hitters who can carry a team on any given day and are 25%+ above league average. Chas is having a great season. Diaz, Dubon, Julks, and Meyers have all been quality complimentary players who have contributed and had great moments. It's the pitching that is just not deep enough. This team needs to have 5 starters who can go 6 innings nearly every start. The bullpen is worn out and this year is looking much more like 2021 than 2022. I would love to see a SP and a RP added this month. A bat would also be welcome, but not a priority.
Was telling a few friends that Hendricks will be a guy to keep an eye on. Looks like he's back to his old form. Solid WHIP. Has a club option for next yr. Looked good yesterday. Don't know if the Cubs are willing to move him. Next few weeks will be interesting.

Padres traded away WAY more than that to get a single season of Soto, much less including Hader. It may be fair. You are talking 4 players who all have all-star ceilings, 3 of them are MLB proven, and 18 years of control between them . This is interesting to me but I don't think SD does it because, while the players all have high ceilings, they aren't as high and also have lower floors than most top 50 type prospects that they will be offered.
Padres Receive Jacob Melton Korey Lee Spencer Arrighetti Misael Tamarez Joe Perez Astros get Blake Snell Josh Hader.
This seems reasonable if Padres become sellers which is looking more likely the way their season is going. I would try to give up less since Snell and Hader would both be rentals with their contacts due up.
They traded for 2.5 seasons of Soto and 1 of Bell. It would not be the Astros fault if they wasted a season of Soto's value while he was on lower arb numbers. I would not do that trade from the Astros side. I think the value of Diaz as a catcher is enormous, and the Astros are wasting that value as a DH. Though, if the Astros aren't going to use Diaz as the primary catcher and were thinking they had to trade him, Soto would be the guy I would try to acquire. If the Padres can pry Diaz out of the Astros hands, I think Hader is just a throw-in relative to the other guys in the deal.
