Hopefully this means Tate is traded and they keep KMJ. Said it before and will say it again DON’T TRADE KMJ!!!
Can they still trade him? Or is this like when they sign a free agent and there is a number of days or months or whatever before they become eligible for trade?
Take away the spectacular dunks and a few sporadic blocks and what do you really have with KJ? He's an exceptional athlete, but a mediocre NBA player. He needs to get that 3-point shot to fall consistently before he's worth enough to warrant a single exclamation point, much less three.
Picking up the option is what enables them to trade him. Otherwise, you can’t trade players with non-guaranteed contracts in the following year. I think that initial Rockets trade for Chris Paul (where they acquired all these non-guaranteed expirings) pushed the league to close that loophole.
Will they extend him with incentive clauses in his contract or will they trade him after all he was a 52th pick in the second round so a FRp for him is a dub
I looked at the stats the other day because I’ve seen a lot of people say they’d like Bruce Brown, and on a worse team KJ’s stats are pretty much identical to his. KJ does more than just get sporadic blocks and dunks. He’s a good cutter and a high energy player and he’s a good finisher around the rim. BB was a valuable contributor on a championship team and kj is comparable player to him as far as production goes. They are both guys who don’t need to have the ball or have anything drawn up for them to be productive. That’s a valuable skill. I think there’s a reason it has been reported that contending teams would like to have him as a rotation piece.
I think this is a sign that he's on his way out of Houston, If he was part of the long term plan they'd have declined the option, let him hit RFA and matched an offer sheet locking him in for 4 years at market value. Keeping him on the $1.93m 4th year option makes him RFA next year and it's very unlikely he returns. I suspect he's gone by the trade deadline ..... if not, its a criminal waste of an asset.
Good point, I think he could be a nice place holder until the deadline if Cam starts in the Valley. Then trade him to a contender as a reward, so he can drive up his value as a UFA.
He is not exclamations worthy. Still Martin is top 15 efficient. .635 TS% is nice no matter how it gets done. Its just enough to offset his other flaws, to get him near league average. And he's young & cheap. He's actually one of the few young Rockets to play above initial projection, him and Sengun. Porter has numbers but not real point guard & shaky leadership. Green has bursts but "hollow stats". Eason, Bari, Garuba, Christopher, Tyty, Nix (lol) are too inconsistent or theyve struggled. All of them have question marks. Just Martin has played past being drafted in the 50's.
