Because the Hawks have young guys they want to get into the rotation already Eg Jalen Johnson, AJ Griffin and Saddiq Bey So bringing in a 'John Collins lite' in KJ might give them a hedge on that front ALSO the Mavs can't trade 10 for Capela. They need to include a contract in return (which thr Hawks don't want) So if we take the salary dump (Bertans) then perhaps it earns us pick 10 to facilitate a deal (I think there must be more involved- but one can see the logic)
But aren't Johnson, Griffin and Bey all reasons for why the Hawks wouldn't want KJ? They already don't have enough playing time so adding KJ just makes it worse.
The coach can give the minutes to whomever he wants. But KJ has played a lot of NBA minutes do far, and is a known commodity. If one or none of JJ, SB or AG work out, one has a proven commodity (with upside) to play. Also, KJMjr expires at the end of the year, Collins doesn't. So effectively the could play him for a season and increase the minutes for (say) JJ - and make an assessment along the way as to whether offer KJ an extension or not. Basically, by freeing up the salary they have a lot more options moving forward, and by taking KJ they have a hedge on whether their young guys develop
Only shot we have at Miller or Scoot is if Portland picks Amen instead. Only reason Portland would trade that #3 pick to us is if they plan on picking Amen anyhow as to try to fleece us. Best case scenario is hold pact, don't overpay to move up and enjoy the #4 pick whatever it may be.
3 team trade is less likely than just dealing with the Mavs. Mavs can turn an unproductive, bad contract and the 10th pick into role players on good contracts plus the 20th pick by dealing with Rockets only. I'm sure the Mavs will be looking for more impactful players but we seem like a decent back up plan.
https://theathletic.com/4630315/2023/06/22/rockets-draft-no-4-pick-prediction-trades/ Trade ideas for the No. 20 pick The Rockets brass spent the majority of Wednesday working the phones in attempts to move up from the 20th pick, team sources said. Sources were given anonymity so that they could speak freely. In the case of moving up all the way to 10 or similar range, for example, there would be a preference to have something in place prior to the draft. But with the draft only hours away, conversations at this point are primarily centered around teams’ willingness to trade in real time, on the clock, due to the evening’s unpredictable nature. Again, nothing has been agreed to at this juncture and there’s no indication that Houston is able to actually move up. But the team is being aggressive. There are different types of structures possible with the No. 20 pick that have been discussed — attaching a young player such as K.J. Martin, adding additional compensation in the form of second-round picks or even in some cases, a future first. And just like that, I’ve been suckered back into the trade machine. Hello darkness, my old friend. Idea 1: Kenyon Martin Jr. + Jae’Sean Tate + No. 20 to Dallas for Tim Hardaway Jr. + No. 10 Hardaway Jr.’s $17.9 million doesn’t look great at first glance but in actuality, it only eats into about $9 million of Houston’s projected space and also gets the Rockets a second top-10 pick in the draft. Reminder, moving up 10 spots isn’t an easy task so I wouldn’t be shocked if Dallas asked for more. Both outgoing players should bolster a Mavericks team that looks a bit thin in the wing department. Hardaway also is a quality floor spacer who should fit in with Udoka’s plans for this season. But a deal of this magnitude would need to be done before the draft, especially if Houston wants to maintain maximum flexibility on the clock. Idea 2: Kenyon Martin Jr. + No. 20 to Atlanta for Clint Capela This is a cleaner deal, with the Hawks needing to shed some salary and also having some positional overlap at center with Onyeka Okongwu. I can see something like this happening if the Rockets have any indication that someone like Brook Lopez is returning to Milwaukee in free agency, forcing them to pivot. Capela is still liked in Houston and is a solid rim runner and rim protector, two things Udoka wants to address this offseason as well. Idea 3: No. 20 + two future second-rounders to Utah for No. 16 This is an example of an on-the-clock deal, where the Jazz are comfortable moving a few spots back for some added draft capital and the Rockets see someone they still value on the board who might not be there when their original turn comes. Somewhat similar to last year, where the Timberwolves moved up from 29 to 26 with Houston.
J.R. hard at work this morning As they say above, some of these trade scenarios really need to be executed before the draft. Stone has a habit of waiting till the last minute and coming up short. I’m frustrated that we haven’t seen any rockets trades yet. Just don’t trust this GM to get this right. I hope I’m wrong.
Idea 1 would be amazing, but I just can't see Dallas doing it. They'd likely want a lot more for the No. 10 pick. I'd imagine Dallas asking for Sengun to be included, but the Rockets balking.
i'm down to bring capela home but i don't see how it helps the hawks. i love the idea of just drafting 4+10. Then signing a quality vet in FA then we should fare okay next season while not giving too good of a pick back to OKC (we need them to take a step back next year which seems improbable). maybe we get to 35 wins? then next season we add another piece and compete for the playoffs in 2025 while having a nice core team for the next 5 years.
I'm not sure that's true. Hardaway is a bad contract, and they would be receiving two good players along with #20. Bertans is another potential throw-in. If they plan to sign Irving, this is exactly how they will succeed -- surrounding Irving and Luka with good players on good contracts.
https://sports.yahoo.com/2023-nba-d...-deal-shifted-the-trade-market-145359265.html Houston has made the No. 20 pick available in trade conversations, according to league sources, fielding various offers to move the selection. It’s unclear what direction the Rockets prefer in any return at this spot.
Maybe I'm underestimating Martin and Tate's value, but I think Dallas would want more for their troubles. I guess if the Mavericks really want to get out of Hardaway's contract like you said, they might do it.
