The Rangers announced Tuesday that right-hander Jacob deGrom will undergo Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery.
Wow. So much for deGrom turning a corner a couple of weeks ago. He'll now miss the remainder of the 2023 season -- and the first few months of the 2024 campaign at a minimum while recovering from the procedure. The 34-year-old hurler finishes his first season with the Rangers logging only 30 1/3 innings in six starts. He was outstanding when on the hill -- registering a 2.67 ERA, 0.76 WHIP and a 45/4 K/BB ratio. For baseball's sake, we all hope that he comes back stronger and better than ever next season. He remains under Rangers' team control through the 2027.

Julks needs to play 5 times a week. At a minimum.

Good to see Diaz out of the lineup. Dude needs a little humbling after hot shotting it the last few games.

He certainly got a little too big for his britches, trying to act like he's anything more than a backup catcher...the arrogance of that punk.

An average over .210 and an OPS over .600, he knows nothing about what it takes to be a catcher for the Astros

I would play him at first. Put Abreu, Jose, on the bench counting his $120,000 per game contract.

What part of trotting Abreu out there everyday is based on analytics? I’ll hang up and listen.

ERA with Maldy 4.82 (carried hard by 2 dominant starts against the hapless A's)
    ERA with Diaz 2.62

But yes, Maldonado is the guy we desperately need out there preventing runs.

Easy comeback Dusty. Just play him at first tonight. You’ve done it before. He might go 0 for 4 but I’ll take my chances with him over Abreu.

    Ok. Please tell me why?

What does Julks do for this team that some other or others don't?

Let's say Julks is playing 3 times per week now. Who sits the other 2 games?

    In Dusty we trust.

I am happy every time I see Diaz in the lineup but this team is 36-24.

I don't claim to know better than Dusty - just enjoy the ride.

Probably the part that says the front office is paying him $20MM/yr and expects him to play and produce for the next 3 years. Same reason St. Louis keeps trotting out Astros-saviour Willson Contreras in the #4 or #5 spot, why Philly keeps playing Trea Turner in the top 2 spots in their lineup, why Lindor and Correa continue to hit in the middle of their lineups, and why every single team ever has always kept playing their highly paid star free agent acquisitions regardless of performance.

If you think Dusty could even bench Abreu even if he wanted to, you haven't followed much baseball ever.
