    Ok I get it now. They should at least let the batter bat again instead of an auto out. Defense gets no punishment for fugging up.

    The out call is immediately made by the umpire(s), when the ball is deemed catchable by an infielder in fair territory. They don't wait to see the result of the play. It let's everyone know the situation.
