I don't get it either. Every time I hear Dusty talk about Julks he brings up the 31 HRs in AAA last year. It's not happening....play the better player in McCormick.

    I'll say it... he's black / AA

Love the coog / hate his utilization.

Chas has the back issue, no? Even if Julks wasn’t getting starts, not hard to fathom that Chas isn’t going to get every start at this point of the season.

McCormick should not play every day, but should play every day vs LHP and probably 1/2 the time vs RHP until a better option is brought in.

Diaz is hitting well vs RHP so could DH while Yordan plays LF the rest of the time.

I think any value Julks brings, can be taken on by Chas.

They should seriously consider bringing up Madris who is hitting very well vs RHP even if his numbers vs LHP are terrible.

That would help motivate Dusty to play Chas more often vs LHP.

Then anyone with a baseball brain would sit him more against RHP so he is available vs LHP

If that is truly the reason

And yet he had an HR against a RHP two days ago because they figured Ryan would pitch to his strengths. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with having as versatile a lineup as possible.

Dubon played yesterday. I know the preverbial response whenever Julks is in the lineup is going to be “why?’… and there’s a better than decent chance he will be the first player sent down whenever another player is back or acquired… but Baker has shown a willingness to stick with an outfield rotation of guys getting consistent playing time.

    Lol

There will always be “that one time” you can bring up

If you really think Dusty gets max value out of Chas I’m not sure what to tell ya

There’s clearly a philosophy not to to make any of these guys solely platoon/lefty/righty/etc. This is exactly the time of the year where you can explore all options. I know you want them to go full court press and win the June pennant but there’s a **** ton of season left… and there will be even more lineup questions that arise/need answering before the true stretch run actually happens.

It’s such a bummer because if this roster was fully healthy they’d be bumping:
    Out: Bielak, Blanco, Martinez, Julks
    In: McCullers, Garcia, Urquidy, Brantley

Is Dubon black? What about Jake Meyers? Was Gurriel? Verlander?

Dusty Baker does have a history of having more faith in some players than others - but it isn’t based on race, he plays who he thinks will help his team win in September and October.

Also, while Dusty Baker is far from a perfect manager - he played a large part in ruining Kerry Wood’s career and he has said some things that only divided his team - claiming black players and Latino players are faster …. He isn’t Tommy Lasorda or even over half the managers that simply clap, fill out the line up card and wait to bring in a series of relievers…. Dusty Baker at 80 years old really knows people and baseball. He is very savvy at talent evaluation on the field, he knows how to give his players confidence and how to lead… and has a huge pair of balls.

I don’t like Julks - his walk rate is horrendous. I didn’t think he deserved to make the team over a few others. I don’t really like Dubon, because he apparently doesn’t know you get to go to 1st base after 4 balls… however, objectively, Baker has been right far more often than wrong since taking over the Astros.

For example, Montero had a few rough games - culminating with a giving up 7 runs over three games. Baker rested him some, demoted him to mop up duty a few times… then brought him in earlier innings with success…. And tonight gave him the ball in the 8th with Trout up and a two run lead. It worked- but few managers would have the brass pair to do it - and it won’t be discussed or remembered-,but it can be an important turning point.

There's valid reason to play Chaz against righties for this reason.

There's no reason to not play him against lefties which still happens. By that reasoning we should sit Yordan and give other guys a shot in the 3 hole just to see what happens.

He’s obviously not experimenting with the stars. They’ve actually played more than I would have expected… but given the injuries and some infield depth questions, they’ve all played pretty much everyday when healthy.

But seriously… Chas, Jake, Diaz, the rest… are expected to be this team’s 7-9 guys if everything is clicking. They all have fairly similar ceilings right now. Yes, success from all still very important… still valuable in high pressure playoff games… but people are posting for pages and pages about these guys as if they’re HOFers in waiting and only being held back by Dusty.

And I actually like having guys who can and will fill in during the dog days, when injuries/fatigue/etc will require some of these guys to step up and not simply play their pre-planned/pre-programmed singular role.

Diversity was key to this bullpen’s success last year and they’re seemingly trying to work on interchangeability with the bottom of the lineup. Their failures only get further magnified when the top of the lineup falters… and its low-hanging fruit around here as to what people will consistently complain about.

No roster stays fully healthy. The Astros are 10 games over .500 with a greater than 98% chance of making the playoffs despite the injuries. Having depth… or more importantly guys who are comfortable with taking on an increased role… is damn important for any successful team (in any sport).

Chaz against lefties is hitting like a hall of famer. It's beyond absurd to even try and justify him not getting every PA possible against them.

I keep hearing this nonsense about diversity and flexibility but never a valid reason why he shouldn't, because there isn't one.

Using him against righties to push him is fine, taking a single PA away against lefties isn't. It's actively hurting Chaz and the team, regardless of whether it's active malice or incompetence on Dustys part.
