I know many (ZRB) are only worried about winning now, and therefor want to give Hakeem whatever he wants. I happen to feel that we have as good a chance to win without Hakeem as with him at this point, but that is for another thread. What is important is that we need the cap space that Hakeem will be using next year. Anyway, here are the steps required to land Duncan in 2003. 1. Renounce Dream or sign him to a one year contract. 2. Resign Mo for no more than Walt Williams will be making next season, or to a large one year deal. 3. This part really hurts. Renounce Moochie. With Griffen and TMo and Langhi earning significant minutes, there will not be as much ot the three guard lineup next year and it will not be Steve and Cat losing the majority of the minutes. 4. Sign Colson to a low contract, < $1mil. 5. Renounce Los and Shandon. 6. Sign the Bull to a series of one year deals until he is ready to retire. 7. Sign a marquee free agent next season. The best choice would be Vince Carter, but it does not really matter. This person is trade bait and will not be sticking around for more than one year. In the meantime we have one of the league's top small forwards. This is what we need all of that cap space for. 8. Trade the free agent aquired in step seven to San Antonio for Tim Duncan in 2003 when his contract expires. Best case scenario: All of the above steps work as stated and we have a 2003 lineup of: C - Duncan/Cato PF - Taylor/Thomas SF - Griffin/Morris SG - Mobley/Langhi PG - Francis/Colson Worst case scenario: We are unable to sign the big free agent in 2002. We need to offer Griffin + ? for Duncan, they may or may not take this. Or we just keep all of our own guys and are capped out after maxing out Francis and picking up some mid level free agent, basically the same thing that would happen if we signed Hakeem for two years. ------------------ I cut all the heads off of a Hydra, and all I got was this StupidMoniker. What about re-signing Steve? I believe his runs out season after next, and he will surely get the max. That probably hurts our chances if we have any at Duncan...but I don't know. It's way too early to even come up with things for signing Duncan. For all we know he could be traded to a different team by then. ------------------ Who needs teachers? I can learn my own self.
Hate to say it...wait no I dont... Duncun will NEVER become a successful bonafied NBA center. When DRob leaves, he will want to go to a team that already has a good defensive center, that way he wont have to guard NBA centers. ------------------ __ Ñ _ _ _ /_ ______ _ \ ÝÝÝÝl____| * |___ lÝÝÝÝ ¡,.-ñý¯Çi ¡,.-ñ~ñ~ñ-.,¡ `¯ýñ-.,
I was under the impression that signing Mooch would not count towards the cap very much. Is it really necessary to renounce him? StupidMoniker,,,aka Hydra, I've mentioned this before: Francis will count 300% his salary against the cap the moment Duncan becomes a free agent. In dollar amounts, Francis will count roughly $11m against the cap, without even signing him to a new deal. This cap hit is simultaneous to the day when Duncan becomes a free agent.
SuperS32, you make Duncan sound like a punk. Hes far from that. Duncan will guard anybody. Remember the WCF just a few weeks ago?? The Spurs finally let TD guard Shaq in game 2 after he begged them, and Duncan held him to just 19 points, his lowest of the playoffs. ------------------
I was mistaken in my previous post, I went back and checked it and it was actually game 3. By the way, Duncan scored 40 that game. ------------------
Duncan will NEVER join the Rockets. He will go to the east, away from the forwards and centers of the west. I am so glad that the Rockets didn't ruin their nucleus to get Webber. Now all they need is to re-sign Hakeem and all the other free agents to make a serious run through the playoffs over the next two years. Why destroy this team in order to have a 1/29 chance of getting Duncan 2 years from now? Not a smart idea. ------------------ Protrolls.com! Keep the ???? alive! The ZRBucks!

do you really think duncan stopped shaq...haha robert horry stopped duncan, does that mean he's better than duncan? noo why would we trade griffin + someone for duncan...give up on him, we need a CENTER, duncan is NOT a center we are set at 1,2,3 we need another 4, but shouldnt get rid of mo even if hakeem resigns, he'll be gone soon, and we will STILL need a center, not duncan so give up on him ------------------
robert horry stopped duncan, does that mean he's better than duncan? noo Horry stopped Duncan? I'd say his 23 points, 12.3 rebounds, 4.3 asst, and 4.25 blocks against the Lakers speaks otherwise. why would we trade griffin + someone for duncan...give up on him, we need a CENTER, duncan is NOT a center Duncan is 7'0, 260 pounds, and is the or one of the top players in the game. I'd say that he would make a good center. By the way, I love the consistency in the arguments. Whenever there was a possibility of Robinson going to the Rockets, everyone called him a playoff choker, and said that Duncan carried him to the championship. (and implying that Robinson wasn't needed or wasn't a big part) But now, when we're talking about Duncan going to the Rockets, apparently he can't do the dirty work of guarding centers because Robinson does it. IMO, duncan is a center playing power forward...not the other way around. i also think that's a BIG reason for his success. he is usually covered by the power forwards. against bigger players, i don't think he'd be nearly as effective as he is now. dave, despite his charmin softness, IS still a threat on the court, and usually draws the center assignment. tim is earth...thriving. dave is jupiter...protecting. that is the "primary" reason i think tim is slightly overrated...because he hasn't had to go through the fire by himself - EVER. he's always had jupiter with him. yet, some don him one of the alltime greats already. hell, at this point, i still don't consider him the best power forward in the game. he's very, very, very good. don't get me wrong. but i don't think he's the best.
Exactly. That is why, if you read the plan, you will see I am trading salary for salary. It doesn't matter what our cap situation is when Duncan becomes a free agent. The important time for the cap room is next year so we can sign a good player who would be making Duncan money, ala Vince Carter. Then we do an even swap. Duncan will probably want to leave the sinking ship that will be the spurs as half the team turn 100. They will undoubtedly want something in return for him. Everybody wins. This is why it is key that Olajuwon does not have a substantial guaranteed contract next season. ------------------ I cut all the heads off of a Hydra, and all I got was this StupidMoniker. Mooch will not count toward the cap very much this year because we can sign him last and let his old salary determine the cap hit while working with everybody else. Once he signs the new contract, he counts for whatever we sign him for. A one year deal would also be an option if he wouldn't mind taking it. ------------------ I cut all the heads off of a Hydra, and all I got was this StupidMoniker. If you think that all of the teams in the NBA will have an equal chance at picking up Duncan, then maybe mine is not the stupid idea. ------------------ I cut all the heads off of a Hydra, and all I got was this StupidMoniker. "God is dead" - Friedrich Nietzsche ~1880 "Nietzshce is dead" - God 1900
that is not nearly enough, Cat. and what robert horry did was exceptional. he allowed the lakers to single cover duncan. he also made duncan reposition himself COUNTLESS TIMES in the post. he never gave him his 45 degree angle post. then he was coming down and hitting the 3 enough to stretch the spurs' "d". robert horry effectively won the battle against tim duncan in the playoffs.
The Lakers may have won the battle against the Spurs, but Duncan clearly abused Horry. The Lakers were playing exceptional team ball, shooting it well, and Kobe dominated the smaller Antonio Daniels and the injured Derek Anderson. That's why they won. Horry may have played Duncan better than Juwan Howard, but TD still had his way for most of that series. And by the way, Horry shot just 25% from the three point line in that series. ------------------ Draftsource.net-- the premier source for draft info. Profiles, rankings, mock drafts, and more! cat, the last 2 games of the series, horry was primarily guarding him. game 3: tim shot 3 of 14 for 9 points!! game 4: tim shot 5 of 10 for 15 points!! i stand corrected on the horry 3 point shooting. however, his defense on duncan was SPECTACULAR. think about it: he single covered tim duncan and held him well below his average. all this in a playoff atmosphere. that is phenomenal defense. it's also terrible offense on duncan's part, but i'll save that for a different thread.
