Several teams, including Miami, Utah, Houston and Toronto, expressed interest in Hudson before he told Taylor he wanted to stay with the club and share point guard duties with Sam Cassell. On July 14, Hudson said he and the Wolves had agreed in principle on a six-year contract that will pay him a first-year salary of $5.1 million including incentives. Since that date, the backup point guard has had difficulty getting formal approval of the contract from Wolves attorneys and the NBA office. 5.1 - is Hudson worth more than 3??? Hudson might try other teams Point guard, Wolves tangling over contract BY RAY RICHARDSON Pioneer Press Frustrated by the lack of progress in finalizing his contract with the Timberwolves, Troy Hudson said he's close to asking his agent, Bill Neff, to contact other NBA teams. Hudson, a free agent after last season, said he might make that decision if no agreement is reached by the end of the week. "I'm getting a little irritated,'' he said Monday. "I really want to be in a stable situation. I want to find out where I'm going to be for the season.'' On July 14, Hudson said he and the Wolves had agreed in principle on a six-year contract that will pay him a first-year salary of $5.1 million including incentives. Since that date, the backup point guard has had difficulty getting formal approval of the contract from Wolves attorneys and the NBA office. Wolves owner Glen Taylor declined to comment on Hudson's stalemate Monday. Wolves Vice President Kevin McHale and coach Flip Saunders were unavailable for comment. Hudson reiterated that he wants to sign with the Wolves. Several teams, including Miami, Utah, Houston and Toronto, expressed interest in Hudson before he told Taylor he wanted to stay with the club and share point guard duties with Sam Cassell. Hudson said language in the contract "keeps changing," an indication that the two sides are still trying to agree on how to address Hudson's injury situation. Hudson missed 52 games last season with a badly sprained right ankle and underwent surgery in April. He's not expected to be at full strength until mid-September. Neff said he plans to submit a new proposal to Taylor and the league office today, and that he hopes to follow it up by talking with Taylor. Taylor and Wolves attorney Greg Jackson are handling Hudson's negotiations with Neff. "I have the same frustration as Troy,'' Neff said. "I think we'll be able to get this done by the end of the week.''
He won't get 5.1M from other teams. His 5.1M is based heavily on incentives, and once that breaks down, he'll have to take less money. He only stayedwith Minny because they were offering him more money. Now he has to take a pay cut. However, I would rather not lock him up for 4 years. He doesn't fit in with our team.
He is a less talented version of Francis. eratic player with bad shot Selection and low basketball IQ.
Must be the incentives. The league has to approve all incentives based on whether they are, "likely to be achieved" or "unlikely to be achieved". If they are "Likely" then the incentives will have to count against the cap.
What is with the fascination with this guy? He's a shooting guard in a point guard's body. The Rockets need a PG with better court sense, not another guy who isn't afradi to jack it up. Hudson is not the answer. Daniels would be better, seeing that he can penetrate a little better and is more careful with the ball. Daniels is less-injury prone as well.
Hudson is Steve Francis lite... NO THANK YOU!!! We need somebody who can handle the ball, protect the ball, and make the occasional shot. Also, no way is he worth 5 mill per year starting salary.
Hudson looks like a miniature Booker T (WWE). He's a sparkplug. He might even be better coming off the bench for us. Kinda like our 93-94 version of Sam Cassell.
1. Hudson is injury prone, I don't want a PG for 1/2 a season. 2. I don't want to pay Hudson 5.1M 3. He's too streaky, when he is one-he is very good, but I want some stability, especially fromt he guy who will make the decisions.
Beggers can't be choosers. If Hudson doesn't fit he probably has trade value anyway. The Rockets need a PG, and Hudson is a pretty solid player. Last year was lost to injury, but the year before he put up 14 ppg and 6 apg, with less dominant options then he would have in Houston. He had Garnett in Minnesota and questionable options prior to the T-Wolves acquiring Spree and Sam. Now he would have Yao, T-Mac and Juwan Howard. Add those three, along with Hudson and Jimmy Jackson, WOW.
today the timberwolve match the offer to stay with the team Aug. 4, 2004 — Timberwolves Vice President of Basketball Operations Kevin McHale today announced the team has matched the free agent contract offered by the Portland Trail Blazers to guard/forward Trenton Hassell. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Under the NBA's Collective Bargaining Agreement, the Timberwolves had 15 days in which to either match the offer or lose Hassell's services. Hassell signed an offer sheet with the Trail Blazers on July 26. He became a restricted free agent July 1 and therefore was eligible to solicit offers from other clubs. "We're pleased to have re-signed Trenton and have him in the fold for the next few years," McHale said. "Trenton played a key role in what our team was able to accomplish last season. He works tremendously hard on both ends of the court and will provide depth at the shooting guard and small forward positions." In his first season with the Wolves in 2003-04, Hassell averaged 5.0 points (career-best .465 FG%), 3.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 28.0 minutes per game in 81 contests (started 74). He was signed by the Wolves on Oct. 29, after being waived by Chicago six days earlier. The three-year NBA veteran reached double figures on eight occasions, collecting a season-high 15 points vs. Phoenix on Jan. 25. He played a career-high 46 minutes on March 7 vs. Boston; the Wolves finished 25-11 when he logged 30+ minutes, 14-5 when he scored 8+ points and 13-4 when he grabbed 5+ rebounds. He dealt a season-high seven assists on Jan. 6 vs. the L.A. Lakers. Hassell scored 14 points with nine rebounds on Dec. 18 vs. Dallas, and had 14 points and 10 rebounds on Dec. 12 at Washington, his first career double-double. "I'm happy to be staying in Minnesota and I can't wait for the start of the season to hit the court and get back to work," Hassell said. "I'm excited about where we are going as a team, after the things we accomplished last season." Hassell was originally selected by Chicago in the second round (30th overall) of the 2001 NBA Draft. The Austin Peay University product appeared in 160 games (started 100) over two seasons with the Bulls (2001-02 and 2002-03), averaging 6.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 26.5 minutes per game. He finished 10th among NBA rookies in scoring, 19th in rebounding, 10th in assists, third in three-point field goal percentage and sixth in minutes. IMO they will left Hudson out "i hope for this to happend"
Agreed. I fell in love w/ him 2 years ago against the Lakers in the playoffs. Reminded me a little of NVE actually. He would be a good spark plug.
Interesting, what's thier cap situation now?!? Did they hem and haw over Hudson because they were resigning Hassel all along? This is definately good for Houston IMO. If this thing doesn't get wrapped up by end of week, watch for the Rocs to put in a serious bid! Toronto and Miami have Alston and Dooling now respectively, no way he chooses them over us...
Didn't want to start a whole new thread for this, but here's a tidbit from a Marc Stein espn chat that mentions Hudson: http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/chatESPN?event_id=5662 Personally, now that I think about it, I wouldn't mind getting Sura. He can fill up the boxscore and would make a good combo with Lue.
Hudson Should Be Ours For The Taking I know that we have discussed plenty on this board that we should get Hudson, but I think right now is very attainable and here's why... The Wolves have decided that they want to match the offer for Trent Hassell, so what reason is there for Hudson to stay now? The year before last he was just awesome in the playoffs and he had a breakout season. He averaged 14.2 ppg, 5.7 apg, 2.48 assist-to-turnover-ratio, 36.5% 3pt. Last year, partly due to injuries and the fact that they have a complete log jam at the guards meant that he didn't really get any time at all. Szczerbiak really kicked butt in these playoffs and Sam Cassell is definitely a fixture for awhile now, so why would they really let Hudson to go to waste by allowing him to play only 17 minutes? I'm not really sure what his contract is like, but he would really be awesome on this team. Imagine having 3 guys on the same team (Yao, TMac, and Hudson) who could break the defense down and create for others? If we can get him, I say forget Daniels and Jones and pursue him. Is it possible to pick him up with the TE?
