But why lie? Why tell the media he would be ok with any team when clearly he didn’t want Houston. Would he have forced a trade it drafted by Houston at 1? Interesting.

It's still the same people though. The front office, the GM, the coach, so they have the luxury of banking on their historical record. Our guys are all fresh so the record is fresh and it hasn't been good while they've been in place. The logo and the arena don't develop players, the people do.

The phenom super hype has been there for a lot of high-school success stories:
    Kidd
    LeBron
    Garnett
    Jabbar
    Chamberlain.
    Marbury
    McGrady
    Anderson
    Kobe
    Ewing
    Maravich

And it's been there for quite a few busts too:
    Mayo
    Wagner
    Lopez
    Oden
    Telfair
    Miles
    Pearl
    Bailey
    Cotton

You can certainly define phenom hype how you like. But I think most of us know it when we see it. I'm impressed when a high school phenom pans out. And it pans out a lot. I'd say it's about 70/30 success rate when it comes to phenom hype. Obviously, Wemby comes with it.

Yeah I dunno on the defensive end but he is a 7’5 guy with good handles and agility and mid range touch with long strides. No one could guard him on the perimeter or driving to the paint.

Agree to disagree. I don’t know any French people. But I didn’t know that French people were spurs fans after Parker’s retirement. I think they have that French Dennis Rodman guy but still never got the impression that France was pulling for Spurs. I could be wrong, but I don’t think they have any kind of established fan base. Just like the Rockets didn’t have an established tan base in China pre-Yao. French people would have started following whatever team wemby went to.

Not claiming this random site is gospel, but according to this poll, GSW is France’s favorite team. I’m sure there are old Spurs fans who followed when Parker was killing it. But those days are long over and the French/wemby fans would follow him wherever he went.

all that said, I simply disagree that the league had anything to do with how the balls fell, or that the league benefits from wemby going to the spurs (any more than if he went to virtually any other team).

Cool. I respect your point. Who knows what’s the truth honestly. I just have a suspicion based on the circumstances and the League’s reported efforts to expand the NBA’s marketing reach to Europe including France with so much money at stake. The NBA has never had a Western European player with this much marketing appeal. Dirk and Parker were great but nowhere near the marketing and brand appeal as Victor. Having this guy would continue the momentum built by Parker whom the French worship.

But about the fanbase thing France has had a love affair with the NBA for quite some time and Parker ignited that interest. Other dudes like Fournier, Gobert etc followed suit. He brought the NBA and San Antonio to the minds of French fans. Victor even mentioned that all or most the fans in France wanted him on the Spurs. They even have a fanclub there. (See below) Victor/spur mania will erupt. Considering that the NBA splits all of its TV/Media/streaming, sponsorship, and licensing revenues with the teams, the NBA will pocket nicely from further business inroads with France, UK, and rest of Europe.

Some of those players may well have better careers, but none of them were near the prospect of Wemby other than possibly Anthony Davis.

this is the key point for silver, who views the kid as a giant cash cow for the league overall. he’s simply parking their $$$$ in pop’s hands for safeguarding
