As a human, I hope Silas is able to land on his feet somewhere. But I'm glad the nightmare for him and us is over. Presumably he's good at something basketball, but I didn't see it has a head coach. Maybe assistant is where he belongs.
Where is the Lucas hate coming from? He holds players accountable. The team played better when he subbed in and he was respected around the league. Do y'all even know wtf y'all are saying?!?
No. They don't. I don't either. It's wild to me how many people think they know what's going on in practices and behind the scenes and perfectly understand the roles/relationships/importance of each member of the Rockets organization.
I’m fine retaining both but don’t want the stink of the last 3 years on this new chapter. I get that Lucas and Abdulfattah were not the problem, but this team needs a cold bucket of water thrown at them; not something that are already familiar with and feel comfortable with. They need to feel uncomfortable.
Lucas is coming back….Abdulfattah nothing yet. As I mentioned in the Udoka Assistant Coach Thread, the fear with Abdulfattah is his closeness with Nix. He was able to get his way and significant playing time for Nix last year. Absolutely fine with both coaches if Udoka makes his own calls on the players.
Abdulfattah is a good coach. Lucas is family, so keeping him sounds right. (I don't know why people hate him. He's not a KPJ coddler. Silas was. IIRC, the KPJ leaving the arena at half time incident was cause by Lucas calling KPJ out.)
Lucas being here helps us tremendously with free agents and player management. He has so much respect within the league. Abdelfattah is a young up and coming coach we brought up from the gleague, he won't be hindering Imes coaching.
John Lucas is part of the fabric of the team. Player and longtime coach. The chances of him being let go are slim.
Lucas would be better off in the FO in some capacity like Battier or Brand if he's that well-regarded. As far a player development and accountability, the last 3 years speak for itself.
For me, the hate comes from him yelling at players we don't take those midrange shots here and changing players shooting form at any given moment. Also coddling KPJ when he needs accountability. Im pretty sure our player developmental ranks dead last too
I agree with this. Lucas is a Houston OG, and deserves a role. However the results of the past 3 years speak for themselves for him being THE GUY responsible for development, professionalism, etc. Of course one could make a case for how worse it would be but still... Let's find him a role, but let's also let Ime put the best guys he can find for the right roles on the bench.
If we should not judge the young players coached by Silas, then we also should not judge the assistants under Silas. It has to be very frustrating, even demoralizing, working for an incompetent boss and can't talk in public.
Sullivan is known as a good shooting coach and good at film study. He would be an excellent hire. He is know for being start and fair. Abdelfattah is progressive, works hard, holds players accountable but loved by players. Really good young coach. Borrego to me is best as a head coach on a veteran team that doesn’t need a lot of discipline or as a top assistant. He is very innovative, and is known to be disciplined as a coach when in a staff with other disciplinarian coaches.
I'm not in that locker room, but I don't think that Lucas fits the culture of guys like Udoka, Sullivan and even Abdelfattah. Lucas is smarter than some people give him credit for, but he also isn't as black and white as Udoka. Ultimately I would like Udoka make the decision, but if he did not want him as an assistant, I would offer him a job in the front office. Keep in mind that Lucas was not entirely happy with with how Silas and Stone did things last year.
Lol ... the love, hate temperature gauge for Lucas is going wild in this thread! I personally would like to start the Udoka experiment with a complete overhaul of the coaching staff! Yes, Lucas is admired, and is part of the family, BUT sometimes you have to make hard personnel choices for the benefit of the team! If Udoka wants to keep him, fine he's the head honcho, but I hope he's not pressured to do so because of the history he has with the team! I loved Clyde as a player, but I was glad when he left the broadcast team!! Sometimes change is good!! As far as keeping Lucas to babysit KPJ, enough is enough!! Grow up or get out!!! Go Rockets!!! ....... ....... .......
If this implies that Lucas is a coddler, that is not true. When we first got KPJ, a lot of people kind of expected him to be a miracle worker who could turn every troubled kid into mature person. I warned them that the expectation was unrealistic. Nobody could work this kind of miracles, not professional counselors, not John Lucas. This is especially true when his hands were kind of tied by a head coach like Silas and GM like Stone who did not want KPJ to be toughly disciplined. Lucas probably is not the best coach basketball-wise. But I think he would have a good influence on young players.
