From what I understood... he spoke fluent English before he joined the ROX. He just didn't feel comfortable using it in front of the media.

I had also heard that Yao's English was good enough before he ever came to the NBA. In China, most kids take English as a second language for most of their life and they watch a ton of English TV shows. Thus, having Colin was more of a comfort thing IMHO. Many Chinese are self-conscious and think that their English isn't good, when it really is more than acceptable. As for Colin, no matter how much money he is making, his job beats his old goverment one. I think he was spending 8 hrs. a day translating documents from Chinese to English. Kill me now!!!!!!
