Do any of you have any great sites for scholarships? Especially for Mexicans because I happen to be one. 1st year student at UH Downtown, currently 2nd semester. Thanks!

    You're a minority - https://fafsa.ed.gov is your friend.

EDIT: And before anyone calls me a racist, government reports show that 50% of Black and Hispanic students receive financial aid based upon need, while 30% of whites do. Across all minorities, it is about 40%. The discrepancy is even bigger in 4 year schools, where 40% of white students receive need-based financial aid, and 66% and 70% of Hispanics and Blacks received need-based financial aid. The numbers are skewed in the opposite direction for merit-based financial aid, so it balances out somewhat. (Source: Table 1 of National Center for Education Statistics PDF).

Fafsa is a b****. They think just because we're middle class we can easily pay for college, and I HAD a 2,000 grant that they just took away for no apparent reason. SMH

I'll jump on you because completing the FAFSA doesn't garner scholarships of any kind. It's the basic paperwork you fill out to get any and all student loans or other aid that has to be processed by the University so the college and granting party have an audit trail. The percentage of minorities and whites that get need-based aid is less relevant than actual income levels.

FAFSA is what you fill out to get grants, that was the point I was making. Many more minorities receive need based financial aid than whites, but many more whites receive merit-based financial aid.

Need based financial aid is generally in grant form. Merit based financial aid is generally in scholarship form.

As a minority, the chance of getting grants is extremely high. Start with FAFSA, grants are free money.

    Correct. Well said.

As a student who is APPLIED TO THEIR LEARNING, the chances of applying for scholarships and earning them because of good grades is VERY HIGH. Free money.

Lots of money is just sitting there without people applying for it. I had just $8000 in scholarships my first 4 years at UH-Downtown because of my grades.

    Bump.

My 17yo is a national honors society member, straight A’s, pre-AP and scored 1340 on his SAT. Not a minority.

    Whats out there?

apply broadly, goto school that offers a full ride. In the interim work on interview skills and community outreach to demonstrate leadership qualities and being involved i nthe community. Perception is the most important thing. Depending on what your 17 y.o wants to do full ride to a good liberal arts college may be equivalent to 200K NYU.

(Sauce: got a full ride, know a lot of people that got full rides)

My son was in a program called Emerge in high school with a 5.0 gpa. They advocated that he apply to out of state colleges. He got accepted into Northeastern and Babson, but babson was the full-ride. Texas colleges forces you take unnecessary classes compared to Boston colleges.

AP and honors classes usually are worth more.
