http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?section=nba&id=1848599 WASHINGTON -- The Washington Wizards signed free-agent guard Anthony Peeler on Thursday. Peeler, who led the NBA in 3-point shooting percentage last season as a backup with Sacramento, declined to exercise his contract option with the Kings and became a free agent July 1. He shot 48.2 percent from beyond the arc, making 68 of 141 attempts. He averaged 5.7 points and 2.0 rebounds. Peeler has averaged 10.6 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 12 seasons with Vancouver, Minnesota and Sacramento. "Anthony Peeler is an established veteran and a very solid player," Wizards general manager Ernie Grunfeld said. "He is a proven perimeter shooter, a hard-nosed defender, and brings significant playoff experience to our young roster."
argh! Peeler would have been a perfect fit on the bench for the Rocks. I wonder what's the size of his contract.
So the Wizards now have these guards Arenas Hughes Dixon Hayes (2/3) Blake and they add Peeler? I dont understand.
Hughes and Blake, IMO, are acquireable, but what do we have to offer that the Wizards need? Hughes is overpriced, but his contract expires after this season. Blake's contract is expiring but, if memory serves, he will be a restricted FA. However, his contract is small potatoes. Although both have their advantages and disadvantages, I would not mind seeing either one on the Rockets when Lue (but not Gaines) becomes tradeable.
Oops. Error. Error. Must correct. I was looking at the wrong year for FAs. Looking at RealGM free agents for 2004 - 2005, it shows that Blake and Hughes are free agents right now. I'd rather have either of them over Damon Jones or Mike James.
Blake is an RFA right now, while Hughes will be an FA next year. If all else fails (Jones, James, Daniels), then I wouldn't mind getting Blake to back up Lue. But I wouldn't want Hughes unless they took a big contract off our hands - I don't see why they'd do that.
I don't like Hughes' contract either, and he is a shoot first, drive to the basket type of scoring PG. Ergo -- because the Rockets could lose out entirely if we make Blake an offer and the Wiz match, we can't touch Blake for at least one year -- I wouldn't mind offering the Wiz a second rounder or a little nip of the T-E in a sign and trade. Aside: I thought Hughes is in his final contract year and Blake is a RFA, but who would of thunk RealGM could have made an error (gasp)?
Um; Larry Hughes signed a 3 year contract for about 15 million, didn't he? Which means he probably makes 5.5 million this year? Maybe I got this one wrong, and I need to check realgm, but I was certain he signed a pretty reasonable contract. He isn't really a PG, but his D is decent, and he's 6'5". Long story short, for the $$$, 5.5 million netting 17 pts 6 rebounds 3 or 4 assists isn't so horrendous.
