Ron Garrettson is on tape (NBC showed the replay) saying that Rasheed Wallace "didn't say a word" prior to his 2nd technical that led to an ejection. Garrettson had been talking to team captain Steve Smith, as Smith was asking Garrettson why Wallace had just been ejected. Garrettson told Smith that Wallace "wouldn't stop staring at me to try and intimidate me".

    What a freaking joke.

If the NBA is smart, they'll do to Garrettson (am I spelling this little punk's name right?) what they did to Jake O'donnell, and ban his ass for life. Hey Ron...nobody's paying to watch you ref. Turn the other direction if you don't want him to look at you, you little weak punk.

While I agree, I still think Rasheed is a complete idiot for continuing to aggravate referees. He won't keep his mouth shut and won't turn around and get back to the other end of the court when he's supposed to.

BTW, how about that Hack-A-Shaq strategy? I know you'd be one of the ones laughing (well, at least early on anyway). [IMG]

Hmmm ... LA wins, how soon before Scottie demands a trade to LA? You know ... Nothing personal against Portland. It's just a special relationship between Phil and Scottie and you need to respect that.

    TheFreak,

I agree. No one gives a rat's ass about the stupid ass refs. For a referee to make such an impact on a game without reason is inexcusable.

He should not referee another game in the playoffs, at the very least and should serve a suspension at the beginning of next season too, IMO.

    Sheed deserved what he got.

He is a well known hot head who had already gotten a tech in that game. He stared down the official in an attempt to intimidate him. If he doesn't want people to assume he has bad motives, he shouldn't consistently do those things.

Shut your mouth and turn your head.

I think ron was intimidated by Sheed. Shaq or Kobe would have never gotten a technical for glaring at him, but I'm angry at Wallace for getting the technical on the bench. I think the Blazers were frustrated by the officiating, however they have to understand that the Lakers will be getting the calls they've been getting all year long. If they don't play through it...they'll lose.

Not that Mr. Stern would mind seeing LaLa in the Finals.

I'd have made the same call. And if I were Dunleavy, I'd be happy the ref threw the punk out. Portland was getting killed while Wallace was battling with the ref; with him out, his team-mates could concentrate on the game. I'm sure if Wallace stayed in he'd have been thown out eventually anyway for mouthing off, but while he was in no one would be able to concentrate and it'd have been a complete blowout instead of just a moderate one.

I don't ever recall Malone being ejected for staring at refs. If you watch, Karl is ALWAYS staring down a ref whether it's for a bad call, a good call, or even a no-call.

He does it every single time.

It's not a ref's job to make an example out of a player. It's one thing to set the tone of the game, as in calling palming early or touch fouls. Sometimes the refs allow the players "to play" by not calling fouls in the paint. Never have I seen anything like this.

Sheed brings most of his Ts on himself and most are well deserved, but not this. Not for "staring".

Just another example of a measly ref thinking he's bigger than the game just because his pappa is a high-ranking ref (or ex-ref).

Okay, what happened....I've got Dr. of Dunk, DREAMer, and SpaceCity agreeing with me all at the same time. I guess it was bound to happen eventually after some 1500 posts... [IMG]

The guy got what he deserved. He b****es damn near EVERY play. If he gets fouled he b****es, if he doesnt he b****es. We have no idea what was said all through the game up to that point, but I would agree with the REF. Rasheed stared at him as the REF was walking passed him and he kept staring at him. It wasnt a 'I dont believe this call stare' either like Malone and others do. It was a menacing stare, according to the REF and me too. Admit it, you are a 6'0", at the best, REF...You have this utter ASS who constantly b****es and DOES try to intimidate, and then he stares you down after b****ing at you the whole game. What would you do? Everyone has a breaking point and that was Rons. Good Job REF! Grow Up Rasheed!

If an official tells you not to do something, then tells your coach to tell you not to do it, then warns you again, my advice is to not to it.
Rasheed has a ton of potential, but he is a head case. When things go well for him he is a great player, but it seems like if he, or the Blazers, are having a bad game he seems anxious to get back to the lockerroom.

Was the technical warranted? I think warnings to the player and the coach made it OK to toss him, but I don't know if the official shoul have done it. But if I had a 7'0 idiot staring at me (looking like one of the coneheads eyeing mass quantities of food) and if I had a way to get rid of the conehead, then yeah I would have tossed him to.

I've got a solution that could fix this problem easy:

Abolish the automatic ejection after a 2nd technical.

Change to a graduated scale, where each successive technical foul called on a player results in increasingly harsher penalties.

I mean, I think we can all agree that conduct on or off the court matters little (if at all) to coaches or organizations. You know how many 'ejections' Wallace would have if it were up to Dunleavy to pull him?

One. Two, tops. Just to 'send a message'. Aside from that, most coaches would leave a guy in well past two technicals if they thought he could help them win.

So why not let them try? Leave your angry and emotionally immature player in and see if he can calm down. If not, you're gonna pay for it.

I'd love to see a system where the third technical foul called also results in a personal foul, three free throws, and possession for the opposing team.

Fourth technical on a player, personal foul, four free throws, possession.

The practical limit would be eight technical fouls, because each foul past two carries a personal foul along with it.

The reason I'd like this system the most is that it would put the onus back on the coaches to take some goddamned responsibility for these whiny-assed crybabies and sit them down when they're making fools of themselves.

Dunleavy's got an easy job right now: he excuses Wallace's behavior as 'Rasheed is just expressing himself' and doesn't have to be the disciplinarian: instead, Wallace is automatically removed from the game.

Screw that! Make the coach stand up and say, 'Look, *******, sit down. You're done'.

Thats a good idea BK, but how bout adding swats with a paddle with those FTs.

It would be cool seeing grown men that act like big babies being spanked in front of a crowd like that.

    Or caning maybe?

Man Crisco, you are harsh!! Although I like the idea. But that brings to mind Bobby Knight and a whole new genre of business for attorneys.

Hmmm, grown men being spanked? No.

Maybe we should start this on a trial basis in the WNBA first. Now, that's entertainment [IMG]

And when Rasheed kept his mouth shut after his mother told him to calm down, the Blazers won by 30.

The refs were right to kick the head case out. You don't want to see refs do that, but I don't want to see a player Malone to a ref on every damn play.

No no no! I don't think you eject Rasheed in the playoffs for staring. I think that is being petty and is just ridiculous.

I do think Rasheed goes overboard at times, but staring? Come on....let the guy play. If he runs his mouth fine, call the tech.

Hey DEANBCURTIS, I am with you on the ref thing.
