not sure why people are trying to bring up KPJ

he has done way more than just throw soup…he has had issues dating back to high school

he was cited as a reason why Evan Mobley’s camp skipped on working out here

he was traded for a top 55 protected pick and had to take a contract with multiple stipulations that u only see if it’s a guy who has major injury issues

most of KPJ’s criticism on here is for his on-court play anyways, particularly as the team’s PG…throwing soup and driving off at halftime is just the cherry on top

the only negative thing people can say about Ime’s job performance is that he was only a HC for 1 year and that Boston was still good this season

Think folks might focus on the wrong thing. It's less about the cheating. Companies normally don't fire two people because they cheated on their respective spouse. He's a NBA coach, not the pope; there's no moral clause. The grounds for firing was the surrounding harassment behavior. It was serious enough (and they had enough of evidence) where he was suspended a year without pay.

You can trust that Celtics Org reluctantly did it, because it was also egg on their face. Ime was their pick.

This is what I'm questioning. I'm sure he was thought of highly because of the Popovich tree and all before he started with the Celtics. The Celtics were loaded with talent before and they're still loaded with talent. So, forgetting that he cheats on his girl with wives cheating on their husbands for a second ( ), "what makes him a good coach?" is more what I'd like to hear.

Udoka cheated on Nia Long with a mormon lady with 3 kids. I question any decision making he does.

just some stuff from the Athletic from a Boston writer back when the Nets were about to hire him

In a world without drama, Udoka is a pretty good hire. He’s defensive-oriented and the Nets are in the league’s cellar defensively. He knows the roster well from his time in Brooklyn and goes back with Patty Mills to the Spurs days. He was an assistant coach with Team USA for the 2020 Olympics where Kevin Durant starred. And maybe his biggest asset with this current team is that he coached Ben Simmons for a year in Philadelphia under Brett Brown. Unlocking him could change the Nets’ season. But that’s currently easier said than done. Winning can cure a lot, but this is still a tough look from the Nets.

Basketball-wise, Udoka pushed Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown toward the best play of their careers, turned the Celtics into one of the league’s toughest teams and engineered a stunning midseason turnaround. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the Nets grow more formidable defensively. Udoka will hold their stars to a high standard. He will be brutally honest when they fall shy of his expectations. He won’t be afraid to call out mistakes whether they come from Kevin Durant or the last man on the roster.

Based on what I saw from Steve Nash, Udoka will be far more demanding, at least publicly. Even while regularly criticizing the Celtics players, especially early last season, he was able to earn the respect of the locker room. The players clearly bought into his coaching. After falling into 11th place in January, the Celtics jelled late in the regular season. They finished first in both offensive rating and defensive rating after the trade deadline before beating the Nets, Bucks and Heat to win the Eastern Conference. Though Udoka was a huge success on the court during his rookie season as a head coach, I’m still surprised another team will give him a shot so soon after the off-the-court mess he produced in Boston. It hasn’t even been two months since the Celtics suspended him.

One other layer to this: Both the Celtics and the Nets could be impacted by how Udoka handles his staff. There has been a weird dynamic in Boston, where a bunch of Udoka’s friends hired by Udoka to work for Udoka are now on Joe Mazzulla’s staff. That dynamic will be a bit weird with Udoka a head coach elsewhere. Though I doubt any of the assistants will leave the Celtics this season (they’re under contract to the team), I won’t be surprised if some of the guys with close ties to Udoka eventually land on Brooklyn’s staff. Mazzulla, who never got the opportunity to build out his own staff, would need to find some replacements.

I have no idea how Irving will take to Udoka’s style, but that would be the case with any coach. It’s also possible Udoka’s cutting honesty, which worked with the Celtics players, won’t have the same impact in a different locker room. If the players don’t appreciate his harsh messages, those messages could grow tough to hear. Based on what I know, Udoka would be just about the polar opposite of Nash in the way he approaches public criticism of players. That’s probably what the Nets want. It may be exactly what they need, but I guess we’ll see.

Last year, Udoka came to Boston, reconstructed the defensive scheme and often hung his guys out to dry as they improved through their mistakes. That worked, but they were a team asking for that level of accountability. Watching the film, it’s not surprising that Irving shows up in the middle of a lot of those broken defensive possessions. Udoka has already coached Irving, so he knows how to approach him. Like Jay mentioned, is that possible at this point? Irving loves getting down in a stance when he’s covering the ball, but can Udoka get him to stay locked in every minute?

Rockets gotta swing for the fences. Udoka is the correct hire. I hope they see that.

Silas was dealt a bad hand, but do u honestly believe Stephen Silas is leading that Celtics locker room and getting them to rebound from a slow start to make it all the way to the finals? I couldn’t see it in a million years

I’m sure he would’ve gotten them into the playoffs, but that’s about it
