Yeah I understand, those picks are maximized when several teams are not picking the best talent available and let it slip past them.
We got Tari at 17 last year and Sengun at 16. If the pick is 18 we might get somebody pretty good, but where he finds minutes is the problem. If we can get a really good defensive center with height with the pick, it might be worth keeping for spot minutes behind Sengun and Jabari. Stone may screw up some, but he has done really well in the draft.
I really don't think that is an issue. I expect to see some of our guys sent out in trades this offseason. They can't keep them all. Every one of these kids we draft is just auditioning. At some point, you have to decide who you like best and try to get a return on the ones you like less. It won't even shock me if they send out Josh Christopher since it is very clear they are too stupid to know we have the GOAT sitting on our bench.
Is it still expected to be announced today which team gets which pick? If so, any idea what time that happens?
I’ll take that tiebreaker with the spurs over the 2 spots on the clippers pick. Can’t get everything u want.
So, using Kevin Pelton's Trade Value Chart: The Rockets swapped #30 for #20, approximately the value of the #37 overall pick. Give them a bit of a premium for the tradeup, but overall feels like just one more trade where Rafael Stone didn't necessarily get ripped off, but clearly held an asset too long and sold at less than maximum. Compared to what they might have gotten from Philadelphia during the 2022 draft, where they reportedly turned down #23 and/or Matisse Thybulle, it looks particularly poor, considering Thybulle brought back Jalen McDaniels at the deadline, and #23 brought back De'Anthony Melton, both of whom are real rotation players for a contender.
Sorry, just logged on ... last year they announced it around 4pm, I think. I really wasn't watching this year, but I think it also happened around 4pm, so ...maybe that's around the time every year? *shrug* Like so many things NBA - kind of ambiguous. lol
Where was it reported that the Sixers offered Thybulle and the 23rd pick? Also, those values seems off. Last year, we got two second round picks to drop back from 26 to 29. A jump from 30 to 20 is worth way more than the 37th overall pick.
My apologies to Clutch and all as I posted a thread on this topic not knowing it was talked about here. Great news though!!!
Salary matching rules would make it so to take in Gordon, the Sixers would have had to aggregate Thybulle and Green at minimum. There's no reason to rush to get the deal done on the day of the draft unless you're including in the #23 pick as well, and clearly the Melton deal was the backup plan that came about when they couldn't agree on Gordon. If the sticking point was that Morey was unwilling to offer the first rounder, and would only include the salary ballast + Thybulle as the main asset, then I think it's probably reasonable that the Rockets passed at that time. Maybe I came off a bit harsh on my assessment of the move; I have been consistent in that I have generally agreed with the overall plan and approach that the Rockets FO has taken during the rebuild, but it has been frustrating to see the Rockets pretty much hold onto every asset too long, outside of Jarett Allen, whom they sold on way too early. The chart is pretty old, but I haven't really seen a more updated one. The Rockets got two second rounders for moving back three spots, but in 2025 and 2027. I'm guessing you need to put a fairly severe time discount on future picks. Sengun at #16 in 2021 was worth two first rounders in 2024 and 2026+ (realistically). Ousmane Dieng at #11 in 2022 was worth the same two first rounders plus a virtually guaranteed pick from the next year (2023, 2024, 2026+). At the end of the day, the trade value chart only has as much worth as the player you're trading for. Much like trading up for a QB, if you get the right guy, doesn't matter how much you have to overpay for him.
Regardless of the tie breaker if there's a late first that ends up playing anywhere other than RGV next year it's another trainwreck season (unless it's Prominent Purdue Pivot Zach Edey )
The #20 pick seems more of a trade asset than our chance to draft a diamond in the rough. The disappointment will kick in if we face-plant at the NBA Draft Lottery.
Jett Howard or Kris Murray would bring a nice shooter. Leonard Miller would be a great athlete at 20. Kel'el Ware the backup center we need? I'd be ok with any of these guys.
Never forget Rocket’s Legend Donatas motiejunas was drafted #20 overall! There’s still a great chance somebody great will drop in the cracks!
QFT. Potential Gordon trades rarely consider (outside of the FO that is) what kind of trash contracts would get returned. What do John Wall, Derrick Favors, Danny Green, Justin Holiday, Maurice Harkless, Ty Jerome, Théo Maledon, and Troy Williams have in common?
