The usual... Altuve didn't cheat... Gattis did... may have used steroids when shelling Kershaw because Dodgers were too dumb to change their signs.
The stolen base number is inching down closer to the break even point. Should someone tell managers that breaking even should not be the goal?
Breaking even means that they are hurting themselves as much as they are the opponents. Giving teams free outs in volume should not make teams uncomfortable. Fans, sure.
Another thing that doesn't make sense for the owners. Much easier to pay the good pitchers rather than now all the batters look great.
What is the break-even point based on? A generic steal randomly throughout the game? It seems to me if you have man on 1st, 2 outs, 0-2 count to your singles-hitting batter, even an unsuccessful steal is not a big deal since the batter gets a fresh count. And if you have Yordan up with a 3-0 count and no outs, a successful steal is less valuable. So if the success metric is based on an average generic steal, then managers could still get tons of value from steals if they only use them in advantageous situations, even if the failure rate is higher.
